Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a "classic mode" that makes the combat play like that of the original game.

As revealed on-stage at the Tokyo Game Show, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's classic mode recreates the combat mechanic of the original Final Fantasy 7, in which you'd wait until the ATB Gauge filled up then selected a move to initiate an attack.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...-the-originals

That's a nice compromise to be honest.

EDIT: Something, something, blonde wig.

I have a feeling this game will get remade again in VR five to ten years from now before I ever get around to playing it a first time. I love RPGs but I loathe the aesthetics of these games. The only Final Fantasy series games I enjoyed the mechanics enough to ignore the artwork of were 5 (SNES) and Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX, PSP). I had a soft spot for Phantasy Star I-IV but then online happened.. and I never played that either because it was going in the opposite direction of what I wanted in a game.

Had no real interest in this game until they announced this. I haven't really enjoyed any FF games since they ditched the turned based combat system.

i'm excited, i wasn't able to keep up with their weirdness after 9. I played 11 to the point of killing 3 PS2s (which finally forced me into PC gaming) and 15 was tolerable, but its just soooooooooooooooo short. The combat system really isn't good enough to warrant successive play throughs say like DMC titles, etc...which it kinda seems like they were going for.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.

It makes me wonder if they are going to have these things in the new game - 4x cut, recoil, knights of the round spam, golden chocobo, hero potion duplication with w-item, or that monster ability that you can learn that gives you haste and tons of health regen, I forget the name of the ability but its really strong. Maybe it was enemy skill big guard and health regen. I am going to play this one regardless!

You are probably thinking of Big Guard. You learn it from some snail-like enemies on the shore near the town "Costa Del Sol" on the 2nd continent on the first disc. Once you have Cait Sith and the ability that lets you control enemies (and pick their commands), you can make them cast it, otherwise they never will.

The original had a "Barrier" and "Mbarrier" mechanic, both of which were from Green (magic) Materia, but had to be cast seperately. Big Guard is pretty good because it puts Barrier, Mbarrier AND Haste on your entire party in one casting. Barrier and Mbarrier basically make you take halved damage from either physical or magical attacks until a gauge runs out entirely.

I just played through and finished the game for probably the 20th time in....2017 or something on my PSP Go. I cleared the whole game in 42 hours including literally every side quest, AND beating Emerald and Ruby Weapon. Once I had access to the North Cave (final dungeon), there's a certain area where you can fight Magic Pots (they look like little purple gremlins rocking back and forth sitting in a yellow/gold colored pot and say "Gimme Elixir!!"). Anyway I was already pretty strong and had mastered many Materia but for getting a 3rd Mime, Mastering Final Attack and Phoenix, Mastering 3x Speed Plus and Magic Plus, etc (to beat Ruby + Emerald) I duplicated Elixirs using W-Item and fed them to those guys- you get like 12000exp and 8000ap for a group of two of them. Makes leveling Materia pretty easy.

Emerald Weapon literally got to attack me once before I won by just mime'ing KOTR. Because my speed stat was so high. And then I just used a Megalixir XD

I know similar tricks/have beaten every FF 1-9 numerous times each. FF4 (aka FF2- with Cecil and Rosa) is my favorite. I have not played any past 9 for the exact reasons skupples (?) said.

Anyway I have not kept up with the remake but, I wonder how many sidequests and whole areas will be cut or at least reduced in scale to just being a cutscene or a screen or two for a large town, etc. As well as your point (mostly about battle mechanics and Materia) being relevant.

It's cool that they are adding this precisely to get people like me to buy the game (I like modern action RPGs just fine but have played too many good ones to consider FF15, that this is based on, to be any good. *cough Ys VIII*). I still love turn based games but slapping this on top is probably not enough. Also, last I heard this is going to be the 1st part of multiple parts of the remake because if they were to remake the original to an AAA standard it would take 20 years. It's already been over 5 afaik and the game hasn't shipped. If this is say, the first of 3 parts or something, sorry I'm not interested as I don't want to wait 5 more years after finishing the first installment to play the follow up. And at that point will the same employees even be making it? I dunno. Squeenix seems to have high turnover lately.

You could get self buffs by casting reflect on enemies.

that's funny... I was wondering if those strange little intricacies would still exist as well. Here's for hoping. I still have the original strat guide

also, based on reported episodic structure, a good deal of original content will be dlc'd out.

Dang man, that was exactly what I was talking about. I mean that was THE best way to finish the game. I really do wonder how they are going to tune the game to beat encounters like ruby without w-item hero duping, knights of the round spam. There are so many items needed such as mystile, ribbon, mastered materias and ultimate weapons. I also liked the 7777 strats and some of the other ones such as auto revive and autocast knights of the round. Its really amazing though how awesome ff7 and some of the games in the series really were. There were so many easter eggs and 1,000's of man hours put into it. Even in 2019 I feel like people are still finding new combinations of materia and items to beat the games toughest content.
