[TweakTown] Borderlands 3 Benchmarked: Titan RTX Can't Even Hit 4K 60FPS

Source: https://www.tweaktown.com/articles/9...fps/index.html

Quote:
Introduction Borderlands 3 is finally here and with it are questions on what graphics card you'll need to run it at, so we've thrown through a bunch of graphics cards through three resolutions: 1080p, 1440p and of course, 4K.

Gearbox Software upgraded to Unreal Engine 4 with Borderlands 3, and while there is DX12 support for the game -- it has issues so our benchmarks are exclusively using DX11. The game has some great graphics for what it is, and looks pretty good if you've got everything cranked up to maximum.

There's a built-in benchmark which makes things much easier on us benchmarkers, so all results we've captured have been taken from the Borderlands 3 built-in benchmark.

AMD has its own special sauce inside of Borderlands 3 with optimizations for Radeon graphics cards, but that's more on the DX12 side of things so there is no special performance here on either side.
I've been using DX12 even though it takes a bit of time to load. It gets around 70-80 FPS in game at 1440p with my card at 1800/1200Mhz since core overclocking is still broken using 19.9.2. I'm enjoying the game so far and just finished beating it again on True Vault Hunter mode.

I was pretty unimpressed with the benchmarks. I want the game but can't force myself to give epic any money. Hopefully by April it's not an absolute mess.

On Ultra, yes, the game runs pretty terrible. But I can get an average of 100FPS at 1440p on a 1080Ti by turning down a few settings which give barely any visual downgrade.

Hardware Unboxed and Digital Foundry have both done guides on which settings to drop without impacting visual fidelity.

Pretty rediculous for a cell shaded game to have such terrible performance. There's nothing about the visuals to justify this. Almost seems like intentionally weak performance to sell more gpus.

right, because they'll use the metrics from release to dial in their performance patching.

money and time saved.

also - this series has never had well optimized presets, 90% of the graphics configuring used to be done via .cfg, and I truly hope it still is or I won't be buying.

tl;dw is turn down volumetric fog. I'm maxed out with only volumetric fog set to medium and rarely drop below 100.

it also (IMO) makes the game look better too without the overdone N64-esque fog everywhere

What's bad is it isn't cell shaded. Just textured to look cell shaded.

to sell more GPUs.

so wait... how does that ACTUALLY work?

how does a developer benefit from selling more GPUs?

Do you happen to have a link for that? My 1070 seems to have pretty frequent frame dips. Not sure if it's the card showing its age or if the game is un-optimized. Perhaps both?

They get a check from Nvidia or something. Not saying it's real but it is odd when a game comes out with basic graphics and manages to get almost exactly 60 fps on a 2080 ti maxed out. Just seems like an odd coincidence.
