[IGN] The Blizzard China Controversy, and Why #BoycottBlizzard Is Trending, Explained

Quote:
Blizzard has found itself under international criticism after imposing a 12-month ban on professional Hearthstone player Ng Wai "blitzchung" Chung for vocalizing his support of Hong Kong's liberation movement. #BoycottBlizzard is trending on Twitter, while countless community members, pro players, industry professionals, and lawmakers have voiced their displeasure — and disgust — with Blizzard's decision. But how did it begin?

I know OCN doesn't like any political news, but is that to say we can't even acknowledge this news when it's already all over every other gaming site out there? Seems like this news is rather important to the gaming industry. Will be sad if we can't discuss it here. This is clearly not politics for politics sake, its directly related to the entire gaming industry.

100% should be news on this site.

what would be cleaned up with be fud over china Vs. hong kong stuff.

i'd be curious to see the #s on who supports who. The world's so up side down these days, i'd be willing to bet Team China is huge.

Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

I would like to see a comprehensive list of major gaming companies with significant investments from Chinese companies, so I know what to avoid.

Looks like Apple is one of them: https://www.npr.org/2019/10/10/76884...ong-protesters

you can write off almost everyone

they've sold their souls to the free speech gobbling monster for a few extra dollars.

the endless pursuit of the fountain of youth is expensive

the ability to delete your blizzard account has been disabled 7 ways till sunday according to reddit. I'd assume you can still call in though.

in their defense (they deserve very little) there will be plenty of kids that un-sub just to get the termination email, so they can then re-sub.

activision CEO also has ties to epstein. i'm glad I haven't given either of these companies (and EA) money in over a decade. I could almost drop some fat cringe worthy hipster statements right now.

these three are really easy to hate if you've been gaming for decades. The # of titles and companies they've shut down alone is enough to never give them money.

Kidding about wanting to see a list? No, infact, I was not kidding. I have been trying to find a list about this already, but haven't been able to.

Don't you find it ironic that he'd want to avoid the company he's been religiously defending on this very forum for the last few weeks?

Blizzards esports are not a platform like twitter or youtube so while I don't agree with the censorship they are definitely within their rights to curate it how they please. You would think they would have just taken his prize money and a slap on the wrist and been done with it.

This has the opposite effect as now the whole thing has much more attention then if they did nothing.

Me defending Epic? No no no, you're mistaking me defending logic with me defending Epic.

My stance on the Epic store is simply that competition is good and 30% is too high of a cut for a digital store. I wish it were some other company making a stride to bring competition to Steam, but right now it's just Epic. I have never defended them as a company, I've simply argued that the pedestal people put Steam on is undeserved and in need of serious competition. I have never bought anything off the Epic store, and after this news and their huge Chinese investment, I probably never will.

But I don't want to turn this into another Steam VS Epic debate. We have enough threads for that already.
