[TechSpot] Ubisoft's 'Steep' and two special editions of Darksiders are free on the Epic Games Store

Quote:
The Epic Store continues to tempt and add more players to its platform with eyebrow-raising discounts and giveaways. The company's Holidays Sale became a decent alternative to Steam's annual Winter Sale, and the daily freebies over the past few weeks have only sweetened the deal even further.

While previous giveaways lasted for 24 hours, Epic is ending the promotion with a trio of games, all of which can be claimed until next Thursday. These include two remastered titles from the Darksiders series and an open-world snowboarding sports game from Ubisoft.

I know, I know. Epic store bad. Steam good.

I'm posting this mostly because of Steep. Steep is a really fun game. Like most Ubisoft games it had a rocky launch, but has matured into something uniquely great. You can make custom courses in Steep, play 4 player against friends. Easy to play, hard to master.

As much as I'm supposed to hate EPIC, their release of the megapixels library for free along with their support for Unreal Engine being released for free definitely has softened my opinion of them.

I know Steam released their source engine for free, but there aren't many games that run on source engine, while there are a ton that run on Unreal so for modding purposes having access to UE and megapixels is like a dream come true.

we're supposed to hate epic?

sure glad I don't participate in social media.

i get they're doing some shady stuff, and 10cent anything = bad... but Valve stagnating into oblivion = no good either.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

This has been my only real point in favor of the epic store. The steam Monopoly should end. Valve has had things too easy for too long.

I was moderately looking forward to Steep until I found out the whole thing is always online. That's probably why the Switch version got cancelled too, which is a huge shame because the freeform nature of the game would lend itself well to spending a few minutes at a time in gameplay while you're on the go.

It's always online in the same sense that a game like the division is always online. Open world with other players running around that you can group with at any time.
