VR will only truly take off when the goggles are as small and lightweight as regular glasses and cost ~$99 - $150
Gabe is on record saying he doesn't expect Alyx to sell very well, nor did Valve ever intend it to. They wanted to do it for their passion for games and innovation, and they wanted to showcase VR and the type of experience players can have. But the IGN interview is surely better at conveying their perspective than a forum post is.

It's hard to call it a mistake yet because it may end up succeeding at its goal. It drove up sales of the Index, at least. But I'd be thankful there are innovative developers and people with disposable income to buy expensive headsets now so you can have your $100 VR glasses one day.

But good to know. Picked up the physical copy this morning and forgot it didn't have a steam code so bethesda launcher it is... That said, downloading now and am trying with my slightly older drivers. Will report back on any issues.

Here's a bench for anyone interested, though.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/d...nalysis/4.html

Crazy to see a 5700xt go from a 17 fps lead at 1080p over a Radeon VII only to have the VII pass it with a 4fps advantage at 4k. Bandwidth playing a major role I'll assume.

1080ti is near 20fps slower than a 2080 now, too, at least at 4k. At 1080p it's just a slaughter (175fps for 1080ti, 216fps for 2080).

Gotta applaud them on optimization. Even a V64 is averaging near 60fps at 4k max settings.

Edit:

Welp, this game is pushing my 'oc temps up like crazy despite great fps at 4k. Will likely have to back the OC down a bit on this one despite being able to run BFV at all ultra 4k at the same oc speeds.
The reason the Radeon VII surpasses the 5700 XT at higher resolution is because most CUs go unutilized. Higher resolution increases CU utilization, which results in higher relative performance.
It's literally the reason RDNA outperforms GCN despite having less theoretical performance.

I've watched most of the gameplays available and I honestly think that making the VR exclusive parts available for kb+mouse and controller would be a chore. But by doing so they'd admit that all these innovative VR exclusive features are just a gimmick. I just hope they don't stain the franchise by doing a mediocre game that only has the VR elements as a selling point.

And I don't have the slightest doubt that some modder will make it available for plain desktop (making its flaws stand out in the process).

I used to be like that but I only ended up punishing myself and missing out on games because people vote with their wallet and the masses don't care. The days of just one launcher are long gone unfortunately (and I was one of those that initially didn't like steam when it launched). It'd be a completely different ball game if you had to actually pay a separate license/software fee to use these companies launchers.

If a game is good, I'll buy it. Quite frankly if you dig deep enough into any company you'll find practices you don't agree with and at that point you've got nothing left to do but twiddle your thumbs.

gonna have to disagree with you here. though its a few extra clicks, the extra launchers are actually a boon to the industry. valve had a stranglehold. just ask gaben, he's pretty honest about it. Origin is still garbage though, and I rarely use it. last key was star wars (supporting single player games, its honestly not that good though) and dragon age. again, kinda meh and bastardized compared to DA1. specially in how they neutered combat.

if you have titles across all of them, then install Galaxy 2.0 from GOG. & use it to manage everything in one place.

Add me on Steam, same name

Well while it worked fine on the old driver (despite seeming to push my OC way harder than other games) when I launched it this morning I got a message from the game noting it required the latest 20.3.1 drivers. I bypassed it and it ran fine though.

However, I bit the bullet and updated it. Card runs much cooler than at the same OC and settings. Haven't seen below 60fps yet at 4k Ultra Nightmare.

It's not that I'm happy or content with multiple launchers, I've just accepted it at this point as the new normal. I wanted the physical copy of Doom and forgot that it didn't have a steam launcher, and even if it did it would still need to use bethesda's launcher.

99% of my titles are on steam. Aside from this Doom, the only game I play often that has it's own launcher is BFV. Everything else I launch off steam.
I didn't know Galaxy 2.0 offered that, I'll have to go that route.

anyone else have the NV driver for doom install with control panel, then get asked to install it from windows store?

it reminded me of Guru 3D's clean drivers real quick. no issues now

yeah, most of us are 90-99% steam, still, and for many years to come. the others are just little chips off of a stupidly well funded industry.

oh, & just picked up doom. looks legit, will know after yard work is done.

anyone else noticing throttling on steam? I usually get whatever my modem can feed it, but right now its @ like 15-25MB/s max.

I was telling you guys that 19.7.1 did something odd with the power usage on the Radeon VII. Even though you can hit higher clocks with newer drivers it performs slower than the 19.5.1 when benchmarking. Games run faster though because they're game ready and you get all the new features of the later drivers.

Well the newest ones 20.3.1 seem to be working well for me. Performance seems up for me even in BFV.. I'm also stable at less mV now. Running 1840 at 1006mV which typically holds a steady 1800-1810mhz. This is with p/l at +20 and mem at 1200mhz. Would have needed like 1025mV previously for those clocks on 20.2.1

AMD users should read this before buying the game.
Just reporting I have a 3900x and a 1080ti and have no issues! I am on 2.01.15.2138 chipset. Which isn't the latest, but the Nvidia drivers are the latest. I think I have to update my BIOS as well; it isn't the latest.
LOVING the game so far! So good!
