Speaking of The Hobbit, 48fps is the bottom range of Freesync support on my Samsung TV.

If they're going to do anything below 60fps, 48fps should be it.

uh god that statement didn't age well at all. people barely even remember when they thought 48FPS+ television looked weird.

that's called blowing smoke. It's an excuse.

its really this - the optimization time required to obtain 60FPS is too expensive.

we can all pull of 30FPS ball Vs. 60FPS ball right now to compare. It's visually worse to pretty much all people.

those who defend these decisions do it from a logically dishonest place. It's sunk cost fallacy & tribalism.

you should always demand more from those you buy things from. Not thank and appreciate. Thanks and appreciation are for friends & family.

Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

It isn't just that optimization takes time and money, they also don't want people complaining that the PS5 gameplay looks too much like PS4 gameplay screenshots. If they made the switch to 60fps on next gen they would have to sacrifice some of the potential image quality to get there, no matter how much optimization they do. Of course, if they gave us the option to choose resolution or framerate they could have their cake and eat it too, but then they'd have to do even more work to bring both modes up to snuff. All that extra work is kind of the antithesis of console development.

Still, 60 fps would be a palpable improvement to the experiance beyond just boosting the draw distance and upping the resolution, which might be all we get on next-gen in terms of graphics.

Except if the game were targeting 60fps from the start there would be no "optimization" needed.

The same goes for 4K120fps, at this point any game concept can effortlessly be produced within that spec, whether or not any games end up running any given spec is entirely up to the mandate from the marketing department when the project is first greenlit.

How much were we fed 4k120 and 8k ready and man they can barely push 4k30 without RT? And they want to price these consoles at $600? This is just an incredibly bad look, all around.

How are people this delusional?

What video cards can run 4k at these settings? I know my $450 5700XT can't. I just bought a 4k tv the other and am struggling to figure out how to get 4k at decent frames, other than setting everything to low. The RTX 2080ti is the only true 4k card out at the moment and that card costed $1200 at launch...

$1200 for 1 video card vs $500-600 for a console...Some of you are expecting too much, this is also a launch title as well...Everyone who has lived through a few generations know how much games will change in look over the next two years.

4K+120fps was clearly for games like Rocket League, 8k will likely come through media throughout the console's life span. RT tools are probably still half baked.

It's 99.9% just marketing spiel and pretty much false advertising.

However, everyone knows consoles are garbage when compared to PCs so to expect a product that costs ~ $600 to perform similar to a PC that is several thousand dollars (assuming it has a 2080 Ti) is just silly. Yet, they marketed it as such since 4K TVs are the 'norm' now.

Most console kids will have a 4K TV at home and want to "play 4K." The suits figured that out and so they just throw around these terms knowing full well that a majority of the consumers will never actually test their systems to see if it can achieve 4K 60fps.

At the end of the day, children use consoles. If you are a serious gamer, PC is the only way to go.

I've said this ad nauseam and I'll say it again: Children play on consoles. Adults play on PC.

We could still be in for some big surprises.
They haven't shown what is actually going to happen with backward compatibility. Sony and Microsoft do have a huge opportunity now to upgrade their back catalog to 4K120fps.
I would probably skip the first few years of PS5/XSX games if everything from last gen were suddenly running at maximum frames and resolution on next gen hardware.

I suspect a refresh as well.
