[Epic Games] A first look at Unreal Engine 5

Quote:
We’ve just released a first look at Unreal Engine 5. One of our goals in this next generation is to achieve photorealism on par with movie CG and real life, and put it within practical reach of development teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries.

Introducing “Lumen in the Land of Nanite,” a real-time demo running live on PlayStation 5:

https://youtu.be/qC5KtatMcUw

This demo previews two of the new core technologies that will debut in Unreal Engine 5:

Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see. Nanite virtualized geometry means that film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons can be imported directly into Unreal Engine—anything from ZBrush sculpts to photogrammetry scans to CAD data—and it just works. Nanite geometry is streamed and scaled in real time so there are no more polygon count budgets, polygon memory budgets, or draw count budgets; there is no need to bake details to normal maps or manually author LODs; and there is no loss in quality.
Looks sweet!

Hopefully now consoles and cloud streaming can take over. Let the desktop GPUs focus be shifted to data science.

It's crazy that Microsoft fumbles a hype trailer so badly while Sony gets its console's name associated with such cool tech without much effort. I mean, besides all of the cool games being developed.

The geometry sampling is by far the most impressive part. That looks phenomenal. The ambient occlusion on the geometry as well as the texture sampling is so, so good. The "Lumen" bouncing light is serviceable, and I am skeptical about the procedurally generated animations, but the detail in each scene really is incredible.

Ah! What's the point then? The promise was 4K gaming this gen.

And not one mention of Nvidia.

This is the most impressive demo I've seen. That Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry has effectively EOL tessellation & parallax occlusion mapping.
The lighting/global illumination looks better then anything ray traced from nvidia to boot.
All of this on PS5.

The lighting/global illumination looks 10x better then anything ray traced from nvidia to boot.
VXGI was created by nVidia.

No one, except for you, cares who created what. It's the end results and who can use it is the optics in that demo. Please keep up.
