It's called boomer mechanics, and it's a problem in many modern games.

Bloatware in games. It's a plague. Give me more story, give me more meaningful content, cut out the crap and stop trying to cram every mechanic of every game genre into every game. Can you just imagine the Mafia remake with all this crap? Tommy needs a Tommy gun for a mission, he needs to collect 10 tins of spam, 15 door hinges, a French horn and upgrade his crafting bench to "Jew jeweller" level. F*** off!
That game has so much potential left on the table, it seems like there was minimal effort put into the single player part of the game. I never played the multiplayer part of the game but my guess is that all the effort was put into that portion of it. They learned a valuable lesson with GTAV, they can make more money by selling money for a game than they can make selling games.

On topic, is the Mafia I remaster going to be given to owners of the original like Mafia II and III were? I have all three games in steam but only II and III are the definitive edition.

No. You're going to have to buy the remaster of Mafia I. The rationale is probably the fact that it's more of a remake than the other two (which, seemingly, barely got any improvements).

I'll just replay II and III then. I don't really want to give any more money to 2k or rockstar, but I will gladly accept the free stuff.

Apparently, installing the Classic version of Mafia II and and modding it with this provides a much better result.

I don't have two versions in my steam list, they replaced the original with the new one. I don't think I have the option of installing the original version, kinda sucks. I wish I could remember the game better, I don't recall how I felt about it or if I would want to play it again. III is fairly fresh in my mind, it's always fun to kill klan members.

I couldn't really remember specifics, 1 and 2 kind of blurred a bit in my memory, so I downloaded 2 remastered to see what it was like. When the first mission load when you're in the army I Sicily I instantly remembered it and how it absolutely crippled my 2 7900GTOs I had at the time. It was completely unplayable with SLI enabled, ended up having to disable it and play with 1 as a physx card and turn the settings down a fair bit. Not that I had them maxed anyway.

Well, I dunno what Steam has done (or 2K, or whatever) but while I get awarded Achievements for Mafia II Definitive Edition, they don't appear listed anywhere. Further, while I can install the game from the store page, and play normally once installed, Steam doesn't list it as "owned" anywhere other than the store page.

I'll admit it was good to finally complete it, after getting stuck with an always-crash-in-same-place bug on... Chapter 7 (I think?) on the original... but to be honest the melee combat system is clunky, the shooting mechanic is OK but hitboxes seemed a little weird at times, the driving is... urgh... cars handle like bricks until fully upgraded, at which point they handle like bricks on ice... and I loathed the story where practically every time a cutscene happened I knew Vito was about to get screwed over, again, and just take it, again.

I honestly enjoyed Mafia III more. At least Lincoln Clay didn't let everyone walk all over him.

I'll pick up the Definitive Edition of the original, but not until it's got a good sale behind it.

I liked the music on the radio stations. That helped with immersion a lot. But honestly that was about it.

edit: Typo.

I finished Mafia II on Saturday, I forgot how short the game was.

I started up Mafia III yesterday, I don't know whats going on with the settings in that game. I started off with everything turned up and it was looking like crap, like a crappy reshade preset with horrible fake depth of field. I ended up using 4k resolution (dsr) and high settings, this seemed to look the best. I need to go through the settings and see which one was making it look so bad, I thought it was the depth of field setting but turning it on and off didn't seem to change anything.
