Sony has issued an update to clarify its stance on backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 5, saying the upcoming console will support an “overwhelming majority” of the 4,000-plus existing PS4 titles.

At $400 its cheaper than PS4 after inflation. PS4 was a cheap console.

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

Yes and no.

After inflation the price of PS4 is right in line with PS2 and relatively similar to PS1, PS3 is the outlier. What made PS4 a "Cheap Console" is the lack of subsidization on the price, realistically they could have launched PS4 at $349 (if Sony's finances in 2013 hadn't been at an all time low).

The best example of a company refusing to compensate for inflation is Nintendo selling everything at $199 from 1986 to 2001.
After inflation Gamecube is the least expensive console in history, and one heck of a design achievement all things considered.

Ok so based on PS2 and PS4, PS5 will cost at least $450.

Rumor is they had a hard time keeping the Physical edition under $500, so it does sound likely the BOM for the Digital edition is right around $450.
They're just willing to eat a $50+ loss on the Digital Only console because it cuts out retailers and distribution (about $20 per new game).

All they're saying is clock speeds won't be restricted, so yes God of War will run with spectacularly high framerates, but you can probably count on one hand the number of PS4 games with an unlocked framerate.
A lot of people are going to be clamouring for PS5 patches.

I'd love to play The Last Guardian at 4K60, we have no idea if that will ever happen.

On the other hand Microsoft is adapting their emulation program to run Xbox One games beyond original spec, like the 2001 Xbox version of KOTOR running 4K60 on One X, we "should" be getting nearly the entire Xbox library running 4K60 (realistically 1800p in all the 900p Xbox One games, the Back Compat software just increases resolution in clean multiples).
