[BBC] Loot boxes: Lords call for 'immediate' gambling regulation

Quote:
As part of its wider review of the sector, the Lords report also notes that young people are "most at risk" of becoming problem gamblers.

It says 55,000 problem gamblers are aged between 11-16. As a result, it says, all new online gambling games should be reviewed to see if they appeal to children - and their potential to cause harm should be assessed.

The report also highlights the problems with eSports betting as another potential gateway for young people.

Researchers told the committee: "eSports represents the largest growth opportunity for sports gambling and presents a particular worry, as its players and spectators are young."

UK games industry body Ukie said it was working hard to address the concerns raised in the report.

"The majority of people in the UK play video games in one form or another, so we take these concerns seriously. We've worked hard to increase the use of family controls on consoles which can turn off or limit spending and we will be working closely with the DCMS during its review of the Gambling Act later this year," chief executive Jo Twist said.

Hope these kind of laws become more common.

Do you want loot boxes regulated because you're concerned about young people? Or, do want loot boxes regulated because it's a game feature you don't like?

Be honest.

Maplestory is dead. People still play that crap? Haven't played since 2012 and don't miss it one bit.
Most of the old MS players now have jobs, careers or families. I know a few who are married now.

The sad thing is that those old players still play. MapleStory groomed them early now they spend thousands on the game. It's legit an underage casino now.

Be honest.
I would say both. It is a pretty concerning game feature in many instances that is basically a money printing machine for the publishers. They encourage people to pay real money for randomized digital assets. At least in a casino, if you win the casino loses something so they have some liability. With online loot boxes that isn't the case and I think there are serious legal issues with that. Online gaming has become a way to bypass many types of gambling regulations in a way. EA figured out it can take advantage of this gap in regulations and now EA operates like a casino in many regards except with much less on the line while still having basically all the negative aspects intact.

Wanting to regulate loot boxes over the concern of young people is okay. But, not because it's something you don't like. We just can't go banning things just because we don't like them. No one is twisting your arm to buy the game or any loot boxes. If someone wants to piss away their money on stupid skins or whatever, that's on them.

As far as loot boxes go...
Random stuff for free. OK. Many games have this mechanic.
Random stuff for money. Gambling.
Specific item for money. Selling.

The problem isn't loot boxes and companies selling random chance to get some cosmetic digital nonsense, the problem is parents don't give damn about their own children and let them spend.
Who's old enough to get a bank account/card should be old enough to know what they want to spend their own money on.

Some sticker on a website's listing of a game about gambling in the game won't really help parents as they still won't care or even be there when the game is bought and used by their kids with the parent's money.

Plus in most games all people care about are cosmetics, skins, graphical models, etc. things they can see and are multiple orders less likely to spend on features that are game mechanics, game code, physics, etc. and cannot be seen with eyes as an object or a texture. This way the easy make (even auto generate) graphical elements get a lot of money but the more demanding to do non graphical ones get close to nothing unless developer goes and releases a whole new version of the game incompatible with previous one, as a modder/3rd party... no chance.

Do you have kids? Kinda sounds like you don't. You can't control everything they do and not every kid is the same. The best parents in the world could have one kid that doesn't live by their rules. Just look around, talk to some parents, and it's very easy to see not all actions are dictated by parents.
