My desktop was a uATX i5-2500 build. It was time to go, I have a good job now, and Ryzen stuff is cheap. So I built a new one. The i5-2500 now got paired up with a miniITX board, a GTX 1050, inside a Fractal Node 202. Plays 4k stuff just fine.

Well I'm not sure about a '4K player' but, if you do go the htpc route, power dvd does allow you to hit smb shares and load them on their default video's menu. So it'll play blurays, smb's, etc. you can buy it normally or through steam so you can do i like i did, build a 4k capable steam box as an all in one and even setup windows as a kiosk or change the 'shell' to steam.exe and never see the desktop.

Just a though. hope it helps.

I know a little off topic, but there is a new Kodi (Matrix build) that supports HDR passthru. Instead of relying on Windows HDR (which is crap IMO, no I don't want HDR on all the time).

Now on topic, I hear some of the best streaming devices around are the nVidia shields.

Ive been using a Shield for a year now , running a HDMI to a Denon receiver to my TV/Atmos setup , had 0 issues playing anything using Kodi. Basically just setup a local storage folder on my main PC , so whatever I put in the folder shows up on Kodi(local network) to play. Auto swaps to HDR, Kodi has audio pass-through to the receiver, haven't transcoded anything. Was going to get a HTPC, but havnt thought about it since getting a Shield.
