Anyone have data on how HDD obstruction affects front intake's cooling ability?

I tried Googling around but couldn't find anything.

I use many 3.5" hard drives located in cages right behind the intake fans, as is tradition. But I'm wondering how much this impacts overall case cooling (e.g., CPU/GPU temps), given the physical obstruction.

This isn't just an academic question - if temperatures are significantly affected, I may opt for a larger case that relocates the drives into the bottom of the case so as to result in an unobstructed airflow from the front intake.

So is anyone aware of any data - even just individual forum users testing it informally - on the effect that HDD obstruction has on air cooling?

My overclock is thanks to the generous assistance of Blameless, who kindly helped a stranger in need.

There must be at least a thousand posts about this scattered through these forums. It varies from build to build, but the effects are generally more than you would assume. You may want to start some reading here - https://www.overclock.net/forum/246-...l#post22319102

How much component temps will be effected by HDDs depends on how hot they run and how well the case fans in case are moving air through them .. as well as what other intake fans are supplying cool air to components. Link ciarlatano supplied has many posts about airflow and cooling. 5th post is good place to star. 11th post might help understand how fan specs work and how to choose fans that can maintain good airflow through grill, filter and past things like HDDs.

Hi,
If this is the case it would probably be the only one I'd make front and bottom exhaust with top and back as intake
Terrible case sorry :/

I'm using multiple GentleTyphoon AP-15, which was the king of 120mm fans at least back when I researched it in 2014. I'm updating my case and I'm debating between Corsair 750D and Corsair 900D. Unlike the 750D, the 900D can have drives placed in the bottom compartment away from the intake flow.

I have five 3.5" drives, and probably more in the future. If my AP-15 fans can handle that kind of obstruction, I might opt for the more manageable 750D. Kinda hard to test before buying the case

AP-15 are good so should be able to supply airflow no problems. Have you looke at new Phanteks Evolv X? It will suppor up to 10 3.5 HDDs with extra mounts.

Yeah, I've just never been able to stand the look of any Phanteks cases.

I've considered the Cosmos II as well, but unfortunately they stupidly only put one 200mm fan for the front. What an insult. Couldn't even give us a 180mm to at least put an AP182 there or something. There are literally no decent 200mm consumer fans in existence.

To me Cosmos II is butt ugly. As for Corsair, their construction quality is not even close to Phanteks. Phanteks are much stronger and better built.

Many Phanteks owners who had Corsair before have commented on how much better Phanteks is built. Phanteks has many different styles of case, some not much different than Corsair, like Enthoo Primo, Luxe and Pro .. or new huge Elite.

But if Corsair looks nicer to you go ahead and get it. Maybe you will be happy with it.

Agreed with @doyll on all counts. Corsair cases are terrible dollar for dollar next to Phanteks, Fractal or a number of others. Build quality and design is always what should be expected from a case at half the price of a Corsair.

And in addition to the Cosmos line being less than attractive (subjective, I know), the design is seriously antiquated and airflow is not up to the standards of more recent designs.

You can buy Thermaltake Core x5 / Core x9 or Core X71 , HDD cages are located far from intake fans .
