Cryorig H7 >92c R5 3600 1.3V w/ B450

Hi there, first time trying this forum. Hopefully posted in right place.

I recently bought R5 3600 with B450 Tomahawk Max and Patriot Viper Steel series at 4000mhz. Arctic MX-4 TIM.

I'm running the CPU with stock BIOS settings (precision boost overdrive was already enabled) AMD cool n quiet already enabled by default also. I overclocked it by setting CPU ratio to 42 which worked great. In fact, nearly all my cores stay at 1.100 apart from core 1's VID which pushes itself to 1.3v. SV12 TFN goes to 1.35v.

With the Cryorig H7 in a game that's CPU intensive but not the heaviest, I'm reaching 89c, stress test for prime95 blended 12 thread for 5 minutes, it reached 92 at a maximum.

While I know this isn't unacceptable temperatures. I expected better considering my cooler. In terms of my thermal paste application, I don't think I put on too little or too much. I put a little 'snake' in the middle, leaving space above and below with 4 tiny dots around the edge. When I squeezed the cooler down on the IHS, a small amount of paste spilled out one side of the cooler and only one side, I could see it had reached the edge at the other end but hadn't spilled out ---> this made me think, apart from maybe putting a little bit too much in (though I really didn't use much) I should have had an even spread and could expect decent temps.

My Cryorig H7 is slightly skew, it doesn't sit completely straight but as far as I can tell it's covering the IHS and is on tight.

Looking elsewhere online, it seems I should be getting better temps with this cooling. At 1.4V it reaches 95c in Cinebench 15 (initially I used the game boost in BIOS option, basically just put the voltage up for no reason hence why I just set it to 42 at stock instead)

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed light and share some knowledge as to why this is the case. Is it my skew cooler? I had noticed some people say BIOS can affect Ryzen but that was more with X series boards. If so, any recommendations for a version?

Any help is much appreciated !

- My BIOS version: E7C02AMZ.350 BIOS Build Date:11/07/2019

What is your vcore again at 4.2GHz oc? Kinda lost it in the paragraphs.

If you can run P95 at stock and monitor your temps using HWINFO that would really help us analyze how good or bad the cooling is. Also, provide info about ambient temp.

What case?
What motherboard?
What RAM?
What case fans and where are they placed?
Answer above and then we can give you better suggestions.

VCore is 1.352-1.360

How long should I run Prime95 for before reporting results at stock?

HWInfo shows my system temp at 30c
(not sure if these are relevant: VR MOS 35c, PCH 39c)

Thanks for the help!

Case is InWin GRONE, MOBO and RAM are in OP... (exact RAM model version: PVS416G413C9K), Case has fan at top (close to IO/back of case), one at IO, two at front panel. Not sure about exact sizes/model so I'll upload a pic.

About 15mins. Just watch it closely. It should level off. If it sticks to say 65c then you can stop. Might help to add another fan if you have not.

BTW, here's how i applied the paste.

When case airflow is setup properly CPU temp will peak in less than 3 minutes. If it takes more case airflow is not supplying cooler the cool air it needs.

I just ran Prime95 and Cinebench at stock and OC. The results were interesting and baffling...

Interestingly: Because of precision boost overdrive it still boosts up to 4200mhz at stock when stressed, however it also uses a higher voltages for some reason and Prime95 showed temps of 83c Max while Cinebench showed max temps of only 72.5c.

-My OC (literally just set ratio to 42) however, Cinebench reached 90.3 and Prime95 went to 76-82 Max.
Vcore = 1.352

-Set it to 3600 manually and recorded temps Result = 68.3c Max in Prime
64.8 in Cinebench.
Vcore =1.208

Bafflingly- Turned PBO off but it still boosted upto 4200 (BSOD first time I done this and when first set to 3600)
Temps = 85.3 Max in Prime
72c Max in Cine
Vcore went up to 1.416, same with PBO on...

- My BIOS version: E7C02AMZ.350 BIOS Build Date:11/07/2019 has been added to OP

Can HDD cages be removed? Sorry, have never seen GRone up close so can only go by what I find online.

2x front, 1x bottom high pressure rated intake fans should be enough airflow with all PCIe back slot covers removed. DGone has 195mm CPU clearance, so even tallest coolers will fit. Your RAM is Patriot Viper Steel and is 44m tall. I really need to know what motherboard you have or at least what the distance from middle of CPU to back of whatever is in nearest used PCIe socket and center CPU to near side of RAM socket so I know coolers will fit.

On my R5 3600 at stock (Optimized Default) using Prime 95 the cores seem to run at 3800MHz.

R5 3600 Stock
RAM: 3200MHz CL16 DOCP
Cooler: U12S with 2 FANS using MX-4
Case: Air 540
Room Temp: 25C

Temp did not change starting at around 7mins it hovered between 55 - 56C.

I think you need a reseat. Follow the paste application in pic. Use two fans maybe?
