Your Define R4 supports all coolers, but would help to now your motherboard and RAM. Tall RAM is problematic and spacing of CPU socket from RAM and PCIe sockets varies from motherboard to motherboard. If I know your motherboard and RAM are I can tell you what will fit.

for those in this thread trying to help (greatly appreciated), here is a little background of this whole thing..

i noticed my brothers tower sounding obnoxiously loud yesterday. i took the side panel off and noticed -both- the front intake fan and rear exhaust fan wernt spinning, and that the stock 3770 intel fan was very loud. In addition, the little 35mm fan on the sabretooth 77 "thermal guard" mobo was -really- loud.

i ran realtemp to see what his cpu was idling at and it was 75C!

so a) he needs a new cpu heatsink/fan

b) he needs 2 new 140mm fans (for front and rear)

c) i have to decide on whether to turn the loud 35mm mobo fan off (bios allows it, which might indicate its not needed?), simply unplug it, or leave it as the mobo requires that form of cooling. I could also try to replace the 35mm fan with something like this: https://www.canadacomputers.com/prod...item_id=083236 , but the 40mm bracket may not align correctly.

Ok, given the circumstances.....and the fact that I had that MB in that case....

First, does he have Thermal Radar installed to control the little MB fan? It's the only way to control it, and they run rampant without it. Those tiny fans are going to be buzzy no matter what fan they are. It doesn't need to be replaced as much as controlled. Right now it is likely going nuts due to the CPU temp. Thermal Radar allows you to tie it to the VRM temps, which is what it actually cools.

The Dark Rock Slim will absolutely fit with these components, and if you get some airflow going in the case, you will never hear it. Will there be a huge upgrade from a Pure Rock or Shadow Rock Slim? Not really, but it is a better looking cooler. I'm personally partial to BQ coolers due to their sound profiles. I'm sure @doyll has some Thermalrights he can recommend, as well.

You need to change out the two front fans, the rear is not really critical. The included fans with the R4 get no air moving through the case because they can't overcome the restriction of the front of the R4. They changed them in later models....but they aren't much better. A pair of Phanteks F140MP will do a nice job up front without breaking the bank, and have a nice sound signature.

Hope that helps.

Yeah....the little girl hentai avatar is really creeping me out....

What ciarlatano said.
A couple good 140mm case fans in front will make thing much cooler and quieter. Other fans to consider are Phanteks PH-F140MP depending on price. Cooljag Evercool R121425SLare good variable voltage (not PWM) fan for $10.99 at FrozenCPU. Block all openings in fan mounting panel so air fans push into case has to flow thru case and out, not leak into front and go in circles. You might find link below of basic guide to airflow and how to optimize your case of interest:

Could you give us links to where you can order a cooler? Then we can look at what is available to make suggestions we know you can get.

what i may do (because im partial to the Fractal Cases) is take the PC and put it into a Define C, where the HD's can go behind the mobo, the psu is covered by a shroud, and there will be nothing in front of the front fans blowing past the mobo/cpu/pure rock slim/1660 super.

i'll also install that asus thermal radar software and try and control the mobo fan.

*i also noticed BQ just release a new Pure rock slim variant.. the Pure Rock 2.. but of course my retailer doesn't carry it yet.

All the coolers recommended here are gonna give you similar results, if not identical, considering your needs.

I would just get the cheapest 212 clon (120mm fan, 4 heatpipes, 500gr~ weight) i can find. That's usually the gammaxx 400 and goes for 20+ bucks. This does not go to say that what ciarlatano said about the fans, but you're gonna run them at 800-1000rpm anyway.

If you wanna jump tiers, go to the 50-60 bucks range. At that price you will find great coolers, that are also a good investment, for future builds.

Prices i mentioned are from US or Europe (that's why i said bucks).

Edit: i just took a look on the website, and prices are all over the place. Considering canada prices, macho sbm 120 at 42 bucks is great value, but even better, you have raijintek tisis core edition at 47 bucks (needs 1 fan tho, but in my opinion, it's a great investment). Considering the prices of the 212 clones and the top tier ones, that thing should go for 100 bucks easily.

Next time you think about saying "212 clone" stop and think about the fact Thermalright marketed HR-01 in 2005 and Ultra 120 in 2006, 4x 6mm heatpipe using 120mm fan many, many years before 212 was even dreamed up and with much better cooling as well.. They also had Ultima 90, Ultima 120 extreme both having 6x 6mm heatpipes, but that's another story.
Everything less you said is spot on.

This is Overclock.net.

Why the frick do you guys continue to reccomend a 212 or 212 clone?

Do you even overclock?

Im starting to think you dont.

Because if you did, you wouldnt be suggesting a 212.

I get it that he just has a 3770, but he wont forever. And one day he will kick himself for listening to you and your advice to get a 212 or a reasonable facsimile.

Im not pointing fingers, but I see it all the time. Why limit him from the get go.

How about you suggest some better coolers than what has been suggested and explain why you think a more powerful cooler is better way to go? That wouldbe way more constructive then throwing a hissy like you did.
