My 9 year old AFB1212H is inaudible at 6 inches at ~3v and very quiet up to 1500RPM. I was so impressed I bought some new old stock AFB1212L fans and the bearing noise is awful (easily 10x as loud). I'm tempted to replace the bearings as they were so cheap. Anyone familiar with the type of bearings that are in these fans or is it a lost cause?
EDIT: Measured them myself. They're 3mm bore by ~3.9mm width by 8mm outer diameter, commonly referred to as 693zz (or 830zz). I thought $5 per bearing plus shipping was crazy, apparently it's reasonable; Alpine quoted 10 NMBs for $40. Tempting, but I'm not even sure these are real Deltas (they spin at ~6v vs the AFB1212H that starts at ~2v). I'm going to pull the bearing shields, flush and regrease the bearings. If that doesn't work, importing Fushi Chinese bearings or Japanese bearings are looking like my best bet.
