Looks like for now the nvidia shield makes a really good HTPC but nearly all options have drawbacks. It is being suggested to wait for the Kaby Lake NUCs as they will have all the hardware decoding necessary with guaranteed long term software support (which seems to be one of the big drawbacks of the other options).

Yeah. Kaby Lake can even hardware decode 4k/10 bit VP9, which is awesome for YouTube.
