If you're looking for maximum point production and efficiency out of your hardware, it's definitely best to use a modern (within the past couple of generations) GPU. There are some new Core AX7 CPU work types which support AVX (for CPUs that support it, but I don't think the i7-970 does), although I'm not sure how common these are and it seems to be mostly older A4 units. If you could pick up a 900 series GPU for a decent price, that might be worthwhile.
