I'm pretty sure the Gigabyte is dead

I threw the stock HS on and cleaned off all of the insulation. It booted once but after that I couldn't get it to boot into BIOS.

I'll try my RIIIE. I'll also have my W3520 in a few days in case it is the processor.

EDIT: Everclear is 80% alcohol. Is that not enough?

EDIT 2: Booted up fine with the RIIIE. I'll give it a while and give it another go.

Still leaves water, 99% alcohol or acetone would be better (from what I've read). My dice run I got the bottom of the bin dice, with regular ice mixed in, not sure how much effect it had though since it is still my only dice run.

I was wrong, Everclear is 190 proof, so it's 95% alcohol. I have the bottle sitting next to me

The difference in temps between 99% alcohol and acetone is still a 15*C difference. Alcohol will freeze around -50-55*C while acetone will do around -70-75*C assuming the pot will keep up.
95% alcohol will most likely freeze around -20*C or so. Then again with the amount of liquid that you used its no wonder temps stayed that warm.

If you use a little bit of acetone you wont smell anything, but you need to crack a window or it can become poisonous.

How did you insulate the board when you did it? And how did you dry off the board after you finished?

edit: This forum really needs an up to date sticky for how to insulate a motherboard these days. Kneaded > Armaflex.

This is what I put under my board, you may use more or maybe less if you like, but this is how I do it. I put my backplate under the padding sheet and through this sheet and shop toweling so the towel is against the board

This is how I insulate the around the socket area and up to the CPU, went a bit overboard into the mosets and such this time you really don't need to do it that much (I think this image was from my first time)

I do also take off my socket latch and put thin strips of padding inside it around the socket inside the latch itself.

And I fill the small square on the backside of the board under the socket with eraser as well, both of which are up to you and not necessarily needed.

Memory and socket area insulated for this run, I use much less eraser now

On top of the eraser I put a layer of toweling around the CPU area

Then a layer of padding above that, and one more layer of shop towel

Notice the multiple layers of padding and toweling

I also use a rubber band around my paper towels at the top.

As for everclear, it looks like you used too much is all. I use about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in the bottom of the pot is all, then SLOWLY add your dry ice, VERY SLOW or it splashes everywhere. You can put in dice first if you want to let it cool down a bit, then slowly add in your shot or so of everclear, whichever you find works best for you. I think your temps were not so great because you used way to much everclear is all.

And just so everyone knows, because I swear by it, everclear will get as cold as acetone if not colder, you can run 68-69C for sure

Some boards BIOS or sensors will not fully register cold temps, so your BIOS may only show -10C to -5xC and windows utilities may only register above 0c or just below.

Hope this helps you better insulate next round, and get some better temps!

Sorry to hear about your Gigabyte board! Are you SURE you let it dry long enough? Did you put a fan on it overnight or anything like that?

Pm me about it if you feel it is dead, maybe I will take it off your hands if you are going to toss it

I'm going to give it another try in a few minutes.

I think thermocoupler isn't calibrated correctly. I was getting -20 on it and -105 in my BIOS.

Well your BIOS was wrong, it can't be that cold either

Check to see if it is calibrated, or calibrate it, using a glass of ice water. Little water and tons of ice, if it does not get down to very close to zero C (32F) then it is way off.

It could also have to do with how you are connecting the sensor to the pot, put it as close to the bottom of the base as you can, I just electric tape mine directly to the side since there is no sensor hole on my pot. No need to put it inside the pot, on the outside edge is fine.

Be sure you only use a shot or two of everclear this time, an inch or so is all you need in the bottom of you pot, maybe a little bit more than that. Just enough so you have room for the dice to mix and be able to stir it a bit every now and again. I stab mine with a piece of a cut and bent hanger to get it down in there every so often.

Good luck with the benching!

Well, the R3E isn't dead... that's the good news. But I still haven't checked the Gigabyte.

I ran out of dice before I got to Vantage, though. I'll have to do those on Tuesday once my waterblock for the 4890 comes.

Anyway, here's some results of tonights runs:

Good:

Better:

Best!

Except I had an 8.343 run that I didn't realize was my best so I didn't SS it.

Thanks for tuning in guys. Any suggestions of what benches to run next? My W3520 should be arriving Tuesday as well. Anything is better than this 920 I have now.
