Cannot boot into Windows

Hey guys, I am currently having a problem with my main rig (running windows 7 64bit) that has me pretty stumped.

Upon boot I am notified that the system was shut off incorrectly. As anyone would try I go for start windows normally. This fails, as does the automatic recovery. I bust out my windows 7 disk image and recovery fails even when booting into that. Alright whatever its literally just a boot drive so I wipe it and do a clean install.

Update windows, restart. Works normally, install drivers , antivirus ect restart. System hangs on windows logo forever. Cannot boot normally as it hangs, cannot repair itself. Reflash windows again, update ect, restart. Same thing. I try to manually select the drive as a boot device and it says the bootmgr is missing…. Alright fine dead drive. I order a new one.

Now the same thing happens with a new drive. I have narrowed it down to the nvidia drivers that cause the hang and it boots in safe mode.

I have tried

Different sata slots, a different video card that uses the same drivers. Everything works great until it gets some nvidia drivers.

I've also tried 4 different versions of the drivers including ones older than the ones it was using before it quit working

Got any specs of the system?

is the system overclocked at all?
seems like you've switched out a few components, maybe keep going, try one stick of ram at a time, different power supply, etc.

First off thanks for the response, if it is a windows setting then it is just whatever is default. If bios, i do not believe so.

I didn't realize they got rid of the my system part of this site.

it is a 2600k on a gigabyte z68 motherboard with 32 gb of ddr3 and a corsair 850 watt power supply. the video card is a kingpin 980gtx alternate video card was a 970 gtx

both boot drives are ssd , a 240 gb and 500 gb

yes, it is overclocked at 4.5 ghz as it has been for like 5 years. load temps are under 70c

( i did try resetting bios though with no effect) i can boot into safe mode and watch youtube ect but just hangs going into normal windows.

Gonna mess around tomorrow with it and try the other pci e slot, if that fails see if the integrated gpu will boot to normal windows.

Seems like it completely crapped out on you. Best to save what you got on C drive and do a windows reinstall. Go with win 10 if you want. Its much better.

We are well beyond backing up ( things that matter are saved on several different hard drives) and the boot drives have been through many fresh installs at this point.

At this point additionally i have tested the other pci e port and each ram stick (4 total) neither make a difference along with a cmos reset, the igpu works fine but so does ether 900 series card (on windows display drivers in both cases). This latest reinstall of windows i updated everything (except the video driver) and made a restore point . and can get restore back to it most of the time when i install the video driver, i tried the super old one from windows update with the same result.

If the problem has been isolated to not being a bad drive, bad ram, bad video card that leaves few things.

The cpu- probably not passes prime

The power supply - possible but unlikely its way over rated for the system in the past handled twice the video cards and when the problem occurred it was shut off normally and and would not post. works fine otherwise.

The motherboard - really the only thing left, while the card works in it with windows drivers perhaps installing something large somehow causes data corruption. on one occasion it did hang while booting from the usb installation, but who knows if i just missed and booted from the drive. ( i should add i used both sata controllers on the board with no difference)

The thing works fine but its like it is suddenly allergic to Nvidia.

So you tried booting on optimized defaults or whatever and still no joy?

Yes, to clarify it boots and does everything, but only with nvidia drivers not installed. I cant get a error log because i have to do a system restore every time i try a driver
