I have used a 5.25 slim optical drive adapter to fit an optical drive, SSD, and add USB 3.0 to an old SFF case... the slim drive and adapter can be bought for less than $50 total... your other option would be to use a velcro strip to stick the drive somewhere inside the case or just lay it in there like you mentioned. Really, if nobody is going to be looking in the case and you dont care, duct tape would do the trick. It all depends what you want to put into this project.
Thanks for the response, I stuck the SSD under the DVD drive which actually keeps it fairly snug (due to cable lengh). I will be using this for Blue Iris as I'm moving it off of my ESXi server.
