Really these big GPU coolers with 2x and 3x fans put way more stress on motherboard than CPU coolers do. Except for one screw in back all that holds/supports the GPU is it's PCIe socket.

To get an idea of how much abuse it takes to damage motherboard with a well mounted cooler, check out the video in link below. They boxed up a running system and threw it against the ceiling, and yeah things were damaged .. but system was still running!
