My first pfsense box was in a 1U mitx case. The Atom CPU got so hot I had to cut a hole in the case above the CPU and install a fan over the hole. It eventually died and I replaced it with an Intel i3-6100T and put it in a 2U mitx case and everything is much better.

Based on your post, I did a search on Intel's Ark database and found the i5-6400T
. I think this will serve me for quite a while and the 35W TDP is decent; should be fairly easy to cool even in a 1U.
Would you happen to know a decently-priced mini-ITX board? It doesn't need dual-LAN because I'll be adding a quad-port NIC anyway.
seems to be a decent resource for all things mini-ITX.
