So all said and done I am looking at closer to $340 to get the card assuming I don't have to drive back to exchange it.

I wounder if a open box reference 5700xt is worth it over a $300 AIB 5700. Once the 5700 is flashed it seems the XT only offers a few % improvement?

Considering ordering that and giving it a try during the 30 day return window. Then if it doesn't work out /is not worth the extra cost or a better deal pops up I have the option of returning it.

Read mixed reviews about that particular card though, personally XFX have been the best AMD cards I have owned.
Stay away from reference cards unless you plan to watercool or use headphones and ramp the fan speed up.

I've had good luck with XFX but last card I used from them was a 7970Ghz Edition. Reviews were pretty mediocre for the card but I got lucky and it was rock solid and overclocked past the average card across all brands. I've been using Sapphire and Powercolor since. Come to think of it, I really haven't had issue with any of them so like always YMMV.

If you plan to flash, can't go wrong with a 5700 at $299.99. Keep in mind as well, now that AMD is off the GCN architecture (Vega 56/64 and Radeon 7 are the last cards on it) RDNA is the focus and 5700 and newer cards will pull away more year after year simply due to driver focus. The whole 'amd finewine' thing lasted so long because GCN was used on so many products so older models continued to get optimizations. RDNA will be like this so at this point in time, even as an oc'ed Vega64 owner I can't really recommend the cards unless you get an absolutely awesome deal.
