Hi everyone,

So... my i7-3770k, albeit a good CPU, is not getting a microcode update after the security issue report so I took a bit of a performance hit. I was planning this year anyway to upgrade, however the outlook in the 2018 landscape of CPUs just shifted in my eyes.

I don't want to turn this into an Intel vs AMD thread. However, I would just like to get some opinions over this recent issue and the performance hits both vendors are getting as well as the Samsung SSD IHOP hits I'm also seeing as well.

The point is, my faith in Intel has diminished and I'm leaning more toward AMD as being the lesser affected company with the least performance hits after the upgrade. I have no brand loyalty and I've owned both Intel and AMD CPUs over the years, however I am not sure who deserves my money right now.

Thoughts? Anyone else in a similar situation? Everything seems a bit uncertain right now.

No matter who you go to, speed vs security is always an inherent trade-off. There is a reason why Windows is exploited way more than Linux -- market share. The big dogs are always bigger targets, even though everyone may use variations of the same tricks to get nearly the same performance margins.

Know what you use your hardware for and secure it, often by stripping out as much information as possible that's not needed. This way, no matter what hardware you're using, your loss is minimal. If we learn anything from the recent revelations, don't put your life on your computer or the cloud.

I'm hard-pressed to believe that the performance impact on your 3770K is critical enough to raise such a big question about brands. I would understand the concern, if your particular use-case or the use-case in question is centered around I/O. Otherwise, you are asking for yet another Intel-vs-AMD thread.

For the average user...

Intel CPUs had performance to give. Even if they are penalized more due to microcode and OS/driver/program patches, they started out with better performance. So it's mostly a wash.

My next build is likely going to be an HEDT build (X299 or X399). I was already leaning towards AMD due to price, but the difference in vulnerabilities pushed me even further that way. Still haven't decided on a final build yet, as I won't be ordering for a few weeks.

(For those who haven't heard of it, IHOP is a restaurant -- the name is short for International House Of Pancakes).

For the SSD thing -- again, you likely won't notice the difference in average usage.

All fair points. I'm just weighing my options right now.

And btw my 3770 did take a hit. It was noticeable in the fps of my games since last week. It still runs fine... But it was a little concerning. Processing music at 100% CPU loads did decrease my rendering ability.

My 3770 has served me well... But I am looking at a new system for more PCI-E lanes and encryption.

I'm not concerned about the performance difference. If the Ryzen refresh doesn't deliver enough of a boost in clock speeds (at least 4.5 GHz), I'll go with Coffee Lake and a Z390 motherboard.
