I currently see a 4790k going for $250 I'm willing to spend the money and sell my 4690k but I was wondering if I should just save that money for a ryzen build considering ryzen 2 is coming out soon. I have the money now and I'm willing to spend but will this outdated platform be worth the money spent? Just wanted your thoughts on how you would go about this upgrade during this time.

Really depends on your usage really. Personally, I'd upgrade the older platform. I literally JUST bought my 2600k setup used in my sig rig as an upgrade over my old locked i5 Sandy Bridge build because I personally am fine with a 2600k overclocked for performance. That and RAM prices lately, I just couldn't justify getting into DDR4 when I already had 16GB of good DDR3 handy.

That's a good question, there is really no need for me to upgrade considering what I actually do, game occasionally. I do stream a bit but nothing too serious. Even after overclocking I dont have the performance that I would like in my desktop during gaming and streaming which is kinda unfortunate considering how expensive everything is switching to a new platform. Getting this i7 would seem like a bandaid to the inevitable but I guess that's technology in general. In the end I think getting this i7 will stave off my need and want for a new platform. It's discouraging that z97 aren't getting a bio update for Spectre, and that's my main concern going forward, if z97 boards aren't getting an update to this does that mean that it is outdated already? Although I do love RBG, my Ram cost me $40 altogether and I don't feel like paying $90 for some cheap 8GB for a platform that needs better ram then what I would get. Maybe I'm overthinking and should just get this i7 and not think about upgrading till 2020.

I think that price for a used i7-4790K is a tad high. Looks to be about market value. I think they're worth closer to $200 considering an i5-8400 is roughly similar in performance.

Considering you stream, hyper-threading will be beneficial for you. You're not getting the performance you want while streaming because your system is tapped out on threads. If you're considering Ryzen 5, consider an i5-8400. Ryzen 5 is probably the better value from a threads perspective.

was thinking about getting a Ryzen 3 combo with Ram and motherboard for 300 selling my current i5, motherboard and Ram use that until Ryzen 2 comes out. I'm not sure I'll probably sleep on it but I think that's the way I'll go.

Just wait for the Ryzen refresh if you're going to do that. It's coming with newer chipsets. Newer chipsets are the main reason I don't give much value to the AM4 upgrade path.

Your concern about your board lack of update from Spectre is it being outdated. Then, it certainly not. Like Pioneer, I still have a Sandy that can game. Although, I have not turned it on for awhile because of Spectre. lol

Your i5 is a perfect match to your gpu. BTW, your gpu is like $100 more now. Ever think about selling it to making profit? Prices are crazy on gpus and ram. Don't spend yet on anything. And yes, you are overthinking.wink.gif

Yes I have my 1060 on sale on eBay now. tongue.gif although it'll never sale because of me overpricing it but it's there. Decided to buy a 1200 bundle because It was cheap. I'm probably going to buy a 1700 soon I mean it's relatively cheap for a 8 core CPU. Over kill for my 1060 but oh well.
