I7 7700k or wait and buy into zen2

It official my oc as taking a toll on my i5 6500 killing the 4th core. Currently running 3 cores 3 thread at 4.3ghz. But games are hanging at worst times.
So I have a Asus z170 gaming pro. 16gb ram spec at 2400 but oc to 2600ish via black oc. Gtx 1080 ftw.

Should I just pick up a i7 7700k or switch platforms and grab zen2 (thinking 3700x With mid range x570mobo)?

Almost always for gaming not so much productivity. Have messed around with streaming in past might consider getting back into it.

A more in-depth answer would be nice.

I only bring it up as the i7 would only be a couple thundred. As switch is quit a bit more. Cost of the cpu and mobo and probably new kit of ram to get the most out the ryzen cpu.

Buy a used 6700k - 7700k for cheap.
My 6700k running @4.5 is perfectly fine for my rtx2070, but if you want to buy it brand new, DON'T do it.

You can try "coffe time" with your current mobo and look for a 8700k-9700k instead. I see users of this forum runs overclocked 9900k on z170 platforms

At this points its either ryzen 3000 or buy elchepo intel cpu. Intel CPU resale value are already tanking badly and will continue to do so. The platforms which require the most cooling will get the biggest hit, so the hedt ones and 9700k/9900k. The only intel CPU I see still people buying is the I5-8400 as its the perfect CPU for office work as Ryzen 7nm APU are not out yet. Most businesses will not buy an dedicated GPU generally unless its absolutely necessary. Something about they don't want office staff using there computers to play games.

I believe the reasoning would had been to not buy a a quad core at full price in 2019.

But if you can get one under 200, seems like a good option. It should hold for gaming & perhaps after a few years you can switch to latest & greatest with more money to spend

I never had planned to buy a i7 7700k new. But used even seems to high

The mod is as. But after reseaching I only fine bios for a asrock mobos. Plus having issues with HT. Sounds like a pain.

Yea this was my thought process but 7700k are still 250ish. Which I agree is too much and why I'm considering switching to ryzen 3000
