Been out of the game for a while, need some help!

Hi guys! Not sure where to post this, so ended up here (MODS: Please help me move this to wherever it fits if i messed up..)

So.. My situation - I've 3D printed my own case, its 17x30x30cm, and the only fans are my two radiator fans. My system is an nvidia titan X(p) and a i7 7700k on an asus strix z270i, with cpu and gpu in a single watercooled loop with EK blocks and a single EK 240x60mm rad.

So here's my dilemma:

My current system holds up good enough, only issue is thermals (mainly cpu temps).. I'm considering either delidding my 7700k and overclocking it (more), or investing in a zen2-based system (for additional threads, and lower tdp).

I mostly use my computer for programming and gaming, and when i game its either overwatch/apex (on my 4k monitor) or assassins creed/tomb raider (on my 1080p tv).. So 90% of the time I'm more cpu-bound than gpu-bound.. so any recommendations to upgrade my gpu - thanks, but not what I'm looking for

Mainly what I'm looking for is the value proposition between my 7700k if I spend 500NOK (50EUR) on delidding my 7700k to get the thermal overhead to overclock vs buying a new mobo+zen2 cpu. I mean.. A mobo+cpu is obviously more expensive (duh..) but is it worth it?

Thanks a lot for any input!

How to build a computer as small as possible, while still capable of 4k gaming, while still being silent most of the time! Sounds like fun!

Do the Coffee Time mod and throw a 8700K/9700K in your Z270 board.

https://www.win-raid.com/t3987f16-TO...Lake-bios.html

Otherwise grab a 3600 or 3800X on a Taichi or Aorus Pro or similar X570 board.

Intel i9 9900K Coffee Lake @ X8 5309mhz (+47.5%)
AMD FX-8320 Vishera @ X4 5022mhz (+43.5%)
Intel i5 4690K Haswell @ X4 5013mhz (+43.2%)
AMD X4 960T Zosma @ X6 4870mhz (+62.3%)
Intel i7 6700 Skylake @ X4 4709mhz (+38.5%)

As far as I can see the coffee time mod won't help me much? If I'm not mistaken it will just let me run a coffee lake cpu on my z270? And as I'm thermally constrained with my 7700k I cant see a coffee lake cpu helping much..? As far as i can see it would just be adding more of the same power-hungry cores, while costing me a lot than a "simple" delid+liquid metal..

As far as I can see a 3700x/3600 is still a 65W tpd, which buys me about 30-50w's+ of overclocking compared to today..

Again - I'm kinda out of the loop, so thanks again for any replies/corrections

You can't cool your 7700K because you're not delidded. Coffee Lake-S is soldered and Coffee Lake still has TIM but it's no where near as bad as it is on Kaby Lake.

You don't really OC 7nm Ryzen, they're pretty much as fast as they're gonna get out of the box.

If nothing you do uses more than 8 threads then I'm not sure why anything but delidding is even an option you're considering.

AMD FX-8320 Vishera @ X4 5022mhz (+43.5%)
Intel i5 4690K Haswell @ X4 5013mhz (+43.2%)
