3rd Gen ThreadRipper VS Xeon 3175X

Alright need some suggestions.

Option 1. Xeon 3175X

Option 2. Third Gen Thread ripper whatever the highest core count they release.

Here's my only issue the processor needs to perform in gaming and we don't know the configuration of the new Thread Rippers in regards to the Infinity fabric links from the I/O Die to the actual chiplets if they changed it or use a different config that would introduce more latency. Before you say get a 9900K this isn't meant for soley playing games but in the creation of them + play.

I would say wait for TR3 reviews since the release will be soon.

Gaming at 1080P or 1440P, W-3175X OC offers better gaming performance in most titles vs TR2 OC and EPYC 7601. At 4K or higher, performance between W-3175X, TR2, Epyc 7601 is similar. TR3 will offer better performance over TR2. But unlikely to beat out W-3175X when it comes to gaming at lower resolutions due to higher core clock speed and OC potential.

If you game at 4K or higher, my opinion is to choose the platform that's more optimized for your workflow.

I doubt the Xeon will be better than TR3. With high core count processors, its all about temperatures and with Intel stuck at 14nm and AMD at 7nm, the superior watts per core of TR3 will allow it to clock higher.

If it was just a normal Xeon, perhaps a TR3 has a good chance. But this is the W-3175X. High multicore OC champion. It's rival is the EPYC line not Threadripper. There is no EPYC equivalent to the W-3175X yet. Or EPYC mobos equivalent to the Dominus Extreme, Aorus Extreme, soon to be released EVGA SR-3 Dark. A person considering a W-3175X likely isn't concerned about watts per core. There are many alternatives from Intel HEDT and Xeon lines, AMD's Threadripper and EPYC lines if watts per core was a concern.

So far I've just been on Intel because for what I do it's far superior to AMD, but AMD has caught up with the 3000 series but it still remains to be seen with the HEDT setup if they changed the Infinity Fabric links and the whole 2990WX with the cores not having direct memory access slowing it down. TR3 can be bottle necked by memory or infinity fabric link setup like the 2990WX then the Intel chip will win hands down. But this still remains to be seen.

TR3. Assuming it will use the same or very similar design to Ryzen 3000 series (which is a good assumption because the first two generations did, and the server chip already out does), there should be a substantial increase in performance.

The W-3175X has a lot of potential but produces an absolutely enormous amount of HEAT. In a real world scenario with a custom water loop, it is tough to exceed 4.3-4.4 on all cores before running out of thermal capacity. At those clocks, your cooling solution needs to remove nearly 600W from a 1 square inch area. Unlocking the full potential of the W-3175X requires somewhat exotic cooling solutions. Problem is, at 4.3-4.4 it doesn't beat TR2 by much, as TR2 can hit 4.2 or so and has 4 extra cores. Value is somewhat subjective in this segment, but to me, an extra $1100 for the chip and $1200 for the mobo didn't seem worth it. Only starts to make sense when the W-3175X is attached to a chiller and insulated.

To be honest if you can split your load, you can probably make 2 3rd gen threadripper builds for the same price as a 3175X build.

^^That - and also per other posts above, you might as well wait until TR3 core detail, reviews & pricing info are out. LTT had some fun with a 64c/128t Epyc last week, and he reiterated in the vid (below) that it had two memory domains for its 8-channel (!) RAM. That bodes very well for a TR3 32c/64t with unified memory. Also, it is not clear yet whether TR3 will have a 64c 'workstation' variant (on TRX80 chipset), but in another month or so, the fog should lift...
