Which to upgrade first, CPU or GPU?

I'm looking at some upgrade options and as much as I would like to stick with Intel and get a 9700K, I just can't afford its current $350+ price tag...

So now prices and reviews of the Ryzen processors, and the fact that the 3700x seems to be giving the 9700k one hell of a run for its money, is just to much to ignore!

So anyway.

I am currently running an i5-4690k with 32GB DDR3-1600 and a Radeon RX-580 video card; and I am using an LG FreeSync 32" 1440p 144mhz monitor...

I have two options here.

I can upgrade the video card to a 5700 XT; or maybe even an RTX 2070 Super... and that would be my budget there, the CPU would have to wait till next year.

Or, option two would be to keep the video card for another year, and instead upgrade the CPU to the Ryzen 7 3700x with 32GB DDR4-3600...

I'm leaning more towards the CPU upgrade but I just want to be sure it would be the correct choice for which I would benefit the most from.

Intel makes zero sense unless you need QuickSync.

nobody knows how you use your PC so any suggestion is just going to be a guess, throw a dart if you can't decide but does it really matter if you're going to upgrade both eventually anyway?

They both need upgrading, so I dunno which would I pick first.

Maybe both, Ryzen 3600 + 5600 XT?

You won't notice any difference in gaming between 3600 and 3700X

Can the GPU market get any worse, is the question.

Be honest, behind the facade of those things, the real priority is just screwing everyone over in the name of obscene profit & delaying any kind of backlash as long as possible. That's the real world.

What are you currently doing that requires 32GB of RAM paired with an i5? If you do any sort of work with VM's or content creation, I would upgrade the CPU first.

Ok, to answer some of the questions ya'll have asked.

No VM's... no content creation...
I'm a private Alpha Tester for a Triple A game development studio under a signed NDA with them. I'm in direct communication with their developers and get their patch builds direct from them, to help them test their builds before they patch to their live servers.
They originally required their testers to have 16gb of ram, and then that went up for a little while as they started getting some bad memory leak issues and the builds started eating upwards of 28gb before we'd experience crashes and other issues...
Though now they're working it back down, as at the moment the current test build I'm working with is using 14 - 20gb and stable.

I also play games like Black Desert Online, MW5:Mercs; Elite Dangerous, Assassin Creed (various, I have them all), GTA5, Skyrim SE; Fallout 4, Fallout76, Conan Exiles, Planet Coaster, Cities Skylines, etc... to name a few.

I play at 1440p, 144hz on a FreeSync monitor... yes its pushing things, and yes FPS aren't "great" but its efficient enough for me.

I used to on occasion record my game play and edit/make videos with the clips... but my video editing software got out of date, and I couldnt afford to upgrade/update it. So I might get back into that someday if I can find/afford some new editing software.

As for the i5.

Its what I could afford. i7's were always too expensive... I've always used i5's; starting with the 2500k; and had a grand time overclocking them... hence why I'm on OCN!

Will I upgrade both the CPU and the GPU eventually? Most likely... but it won't be for at least another year before the second one gets upgraded; and thats presuming I'll have enough left over from next years tax refund!

GPU first. The 5700 XT is an excellent choice and doesn't require the same complete build change as a new CPU would.

yes, but unlikely at this point. Gen 7 consoles are ancient, with replacements following soon. This will once again re-adjust the entire cost/perf paradigm. just don't mistake that for less expensive GPUs. The last thing AMD would do is drop prices after releasing a quality product.

the prices are here to stay, what we've yet to see is what performance jumps will look like going into the 7nm+ era.

My main concern with doing the GPU first is...

Wouldn't such powerful GPU result in any sort of bottleneck issues with my current CPU?

If you don't mind tinkering a bit and your games support crossfire/mGPU, I would grab a X570/3600 with a 2nd 8GB RX580. Performs around 2070 level if supported.
