(read about some poor sod who had a screw fall into his PSU when unmounting his graphics card & he didn't even realize it until...^^)

ok so if the PSU grid faces downward then no risk of anything fall in - but then there's another problem how does air get in? the fan's too close to ground so not enough space for air to flow into the PSU

You can do that, but it is really meant to face down, There are vent holes in the bottom of almost every modern case for it to pull in air from the bottom.

Almost all modern cases have room under them so the air can get in under the case so unless you have the PC on carpet more than enough air can get in so the PSU wont choke

ok I didnt know that

now I'm sort of tempted to switch to this sort of case

reason is I recently bought a second hand Corsair RM1000x at a real good bargain price from someone who's selling their whole gaming rig piece by piece (he bought the PSU in january & still had the bill so it's less than a year old still under warranty)

I bought it cause it got all-jap 105°C caps (plus reputed sites like jonnyguru & kitguru gave it top marks)

but I didn't know it has zero fan mode on medium load until I tested it & this "silent mode" can't be disabled so putting it at the top of my case is out of the question so I was thinking of trying to resell it at higher price (it'd be easy considering how much I bought it for)
