power consumption TEST

Did a test to see how much juice I could pull from the wall. Wanted to see how much PSU I "need" since my EVGA 1300G2 experienced a spectacular failure. I conducted this test using an older Silverstone 1200.

Test setup specs:
9900K @ 5.4, 1.50V no HT
(Cooled with 23c water, 360 radiator, 3x2200rpm fans, open air)
16gb (2x8) trident z 3200c14 @ 4133c16 1.50v
EVGA Z390 Dark mobo
Titan RTX @ 2085/8500, air cooled, no shunt mod
Samsung 970 evo plus 250gb nvme ssd

Measured at the wall using a kill-a-watt:

Idle Power: 135W
100% GPU load: 546W
100% CPU load: 374W
Both 100% load: 694W

For GPU load, I ran Unigine Heaven. The Titan RTX was at the power limit the whole time, and adjusted its clocks to match. For CPU load, I used prime95 smallFFT no AVX.

Unigine needs about 2 CPU cores to itself otherwise it will drop to, like, 2 fps and unload the GPU. So for the full load test, I set prime95 to run on 6 cores. In task manager, I assigned it specific cores. I then let Heaven run on the remaining 2. Oddly, if I set heaven's affinity in task manager to the 2 remaining cores, it would also slow down to 2 fps. So I let it figure out on its own and it loaded the GPU to 100%.

This is probably not a "real world" use case, as almost all games would use less power. Most games wouldn't load the CPU anywhere near as much as they tend to use different instruction sets than P95. And many games do not use 8 cores, or use all cores to 100%. But it is interesting to test a worst case scenario and view the results. I suspect I could probably pull more power with the CPU if I enabled HT and dropped clocks to 5.2-5.3. But again, can't imagine a game using 16 threads and 100% gpu simultaneously.

This tells me I would be okay with an 850W PSU. If I put a waterblock and shunt mod the Titan, and insulate everything to go subzero, my guess is I could add 100W to the GPU and 50W to the CPU. Maybe a 1000W would be better for such experimental purposes.

Yep, people overestimate how much power they really need and most people never put a simultaneous 100% load on their CPU and GPU.

I tripped OCP with my 9900K @ 1.4v and the XOC BIOS on my 1080 Ti, but at my daily OCs on both my GPU and CPU I struggle to pull more than 600W doing anything and generally don't pull more than 400W.

Probably the only thing that makes a huge difference would be a 2nd GPU (+300-400W). Maybe a big core count CPU like 7980XE or 2990WX (~+150W). With 1080 Ti SLI OC and a 7980XE @ 4.7, I managed to hit 1309W from the wall on the same test. Actually managed to justify buying a 1600W PSU. The lights would dim when I hit the "run" button in P95 lol

People could have hit even more back in the days of 3-4 way SLI. I used to run quad 4870x2 and would pull 750w just gaming

My PC in my signature with gaming and prime95 small FFTs AVX disabled draws 353watts from the wall. My PSU is Seasonic GX 550w 90% efficiency, so the PC is really drawing 317 watts from the PSU.

That sounds roughly correct depending on accessories, etc. Either that or the 2 extra cores only added 21 watts lol
