[Various] MySpace lost 13 years worth of user data after botched server migration

Quote:
Decaying social network MySpace announced today in a message posted on its website that it lost almost 13 years worth of user files after a botched server migration operation.

The data --including photos, songs, and videos uploaded to the site between 2003 and 2015-- has been lost for good, a MySpace executive confirmed in an email sent to a user.

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace," said a message posted on the company's website today.
Quote:
The server migration snafu didn't happen recently, but the company was finally forced to admit it publicly.
Quote:
During a spammy email campaign that attempted to draw users back to its site in June 2014 --and before the server migration blunder-- the MySpace had boasted of hosting over 15 billion user photos and 53 million songs, uploaded by over 14.2 million users.
ZDNet.

Quote:
Many people are questioning whether this really was an accident on MySpace’s part or if it was simply a way of saving time and money by not migrating over 50 million songs from 14 million artists, along with all the photos and videos.
Quote:
The company was acquired by Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp for $580 million in 2005, but six years later, following the stratospheric rise of Facebook, it was sold for just $35 million. While it has tried to go back to its roots with a renewed focus on music, the news is likely to paint it in a negative light—even if it was an accident.
TechSpot.

So, MySpace is effectively dead and it took a while for the world to notice and for the company to acknowledge the issue at hand.

Also, this should be a reminder that the cloud and on-line services reside on somebody else's computer, don't take them for granted.

It was Facebook before Facebook was a thing... if that makes sense.

And I'm glad they lost all that data. I'm not at all sad the emo selfies that I took of myself during my college days are gone. What a horrible time in my life lol

there went all my blackmail material! time to find a new line of work.

Remember the golden rule of statistics: A personal sample size of one is a sufficient basis upon which to draw universal conclusions.

sorta, everyone had one (under 30), the fun part about myspace was you could design your own page in HTML, which meant people would bling their pages out.
