I like my Google Home a lot actually. I was against having one in the house for privacy reasons, but then I realized that my girlfriend and I have had smartphones in our pockets for about 9 years now, so we've already been being listened to. I figure I might as well get some convenience for it. It's awesome to say "OK Google, play Killswitch Engage" when I'm cleaning. It's also really nice to tell it to change the temperature in my house (it's paired with my Nest). It has it's uses, but I don't want it anywhere near the bedroom..... All that being said, none of this comes to me as a surprise.

anyone shocked or surprised should put a bullet in their foot.

the only smart devices I Allow in my home are phones & laptops.

no smart TVs, no biometric data reporting consoles, & no talk boxes.

the difference? very litle, I'm sure my laptop & phone capture all the stuff everyone on my phone I've signed my life away to needs.

oh i get it.

at least hey cortana has a dip switch, since she isn't the primary function of the device.

It would be a bit redundant to have to press a button on the box to do X, Y, or Z... That's how we were doing it before all the talk boxes.

still - an opt out of data collection should exist, even if its an always listening box. Always listening doesn't have to mean always recording.

Otherwise, if you want to have access to the convenience and utility of speech recognition software, AI, and digital assistants then you just need to accept that this sort of thing is the only way these systems can ever learn and improve. I dunno, I just really couldn't care less if some random Google or Amazon employee who doesn't know me from Adam ends up listening to my voice searches. Like, what the heck am I trying to hide?

Incidentally, Louis Rossman just posted a video on his channel the other day about Google and their speech-to-text system which would be right up your alley Tpi. Google saves the voice recordings of every single vocal interaction you have with your Android device to your Google account and it is easily accessed on the internet (at least by the account holder). He was really mad that this is the case and argued that if anybody were to hack your Google account then they would have unlimited access to everything you have ever searched or texted on your phone using voice recognition (in his case going back to 2012). I personally don't care, nor have I ever cared about this sort of thing as my personal opinion is that your anonymity comes from the fact that there are literally billions of Google accounts out there and it would be extremely improbable that this will ever happen to you. I also am of the belief that using the internet is no different than going out in public and that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy outside the confines of your own home (and yes, getting online is the digital equivalent to leaving your home).
You know with this becoming more and more prominent, Lt. Colombo's job would have been a cinch leaving us in the cold when it came to his sleuthing.

Oh, just one more thing Sir, why where you too lazy to get up and turn on/off that light? Because of that gadget, I know you committed the murder Sir, you're under arrest. Book him, sergeant.

If Peter Falk was still alive, his periodic Colombo TV specials would be dead.

Well I talk to myself way too much to have some voice activated device around me, privacy isn't the reason i don't use them. I don't necessarily care about how private my life is with people I do not know. If amazon started sending recordings out to my friends and family I would feel like my privacy has been invaded.

As long as none of it can be used as evidence in court there isn't much of a problem.
