[engadget] AI generates non-stop stream of death metal

Quote:
CJ Carr and Zack Zukowski recently launched a YouTube channel that streams a never-ending barrage of death metal generated by AI. Their Dadabots project uses a recurrent neural network to identify patterns in the music, predict the most common elements and reproduce them.

The result isn't entirely natural, if simply because it's not limited by the constraints of the human body. There are no real pauses. However, it certainly sounds the part -- you'll find plenty of hyper-fast drums, guitar thrashing and guttural growling. In a chat with Motherboard, Carr noted that death metal's rapid-fire pace is ideal for this as it creates more consistent output than you'd get with other, slower genres.
SOURCE

This is a very cool experiment. I've actually been listening to it for a while and the only thing that's turning me off is the sound quality.
From what I gather, this NN has been teaching itself for over a year now and the results are insane. The developers are exploring options to further enhance it with the ability to customize the composition to your liking.

FAIR WARNING: It is not for the faint of heart.

It seems to be learning from a very specific subset of death metal; and I understand why: it's mostly noise, anyway, so it's harder to get wrong.

Yes, it was trained on Archspire.

Oh, I missed that on youtube's description.

I don't know the band. A cursory listen to the first link on google shows they have some elements of neo-classical, which just makes what the NN achieved sound a bit off. The band is certainly more "musical" than a lot of the bands I expected the AI had learned from.

Archspire is amazing, that is why this does not sound too bad. Some parts are nearly identical to actual Archspire tracks.

I'd say this is pretty darn cool. Death metal such as this is mostly incoherent and really fast paced so it makes it a much easier to "pass" since it's just a lot of noise at this point.
The bit I heard reminded me of Born of Osiris or The Faceless so when I saw Archspire I wasn't too surprised. lol
