[at] Putin signs “Internet sovereignty” bill that expands censorship

Quote:
Officially, the bill is designed to protect the Russian Internet against foreign threats, including the risk that Russia could be cut off from the rest of the Internet. The Russian government is aiming to get the vast majority of Russian Internet traffic routed domestically in the next few years. That would make it harder for foreign governments, including the United States, to spy on or interfere with Russians' use of the Internet. Supporters of the bill have portrayed it as a response to America's allegedly aggressive cybersecurity efforts targeted at Russia.

I wonder how this will affect US internet users. Also, many torrent seeders are coming out of Russia these days. Could be harmful to legal torrenters, those downloading Linux distros and the like.

That's a shame. Inevitable really, unless you make specific protections from gov wielding it's power over the dissemination of ideas.

The firewall is spreading.
Authoritarians everywhere are envious of China's success.
Europe doing the same thing under the guise of "copyright."

Whenever governments call personal agendas something in an effort to spin it in a positive light like "Internet sovereignty" in reality it signifies the opposite of that. Take for instance the USA with their "Patriot Act".

People need to see through the propaganda spin. We live in a world of the upside down.

Indeed the "patriot act" is anything but patriotic.

Putin knows that sooner or later America will retaliate for what he has been doing for the last few years and is preparing for it. This is exactly what one would expect from the GRU.

Poisoning people? Invading Ukraine? Selling people we don't like weapons (it is pretty rich complaining about that but he is doing it). Messing with US and UK elections. Lots of examples, really. Are you arguing that Putin has done nothing to criticize?

Putin hasn't been a great guy internationally or locally, for US interests or if we care about human rights and similar. The many failings of others on the international stage do not excuse anything Putin has done, hold everyone to account for the bad and stupid things they do. Whataboutism excusing things causes a downward spiral where no act can be criticized because there is always another act to point to as worse.

We do it different here in the West. Instead of actually stonewalling people and blocking information the traditional way like they do in China we just keep them suspended in a loop of bullcrap garbage information. Everything from click bait BS articles, instagram, pop culture, social media, the royals, pro sports and ultra targeted metadata advertising to keep people on the payday treadmill of buying stupid stuff to impress their stupid stuff wanting friends, one upping everyone look at me envying culture.

Same result different method. In China, Russia and other dictatorship countries they actively block information to keep the masses subdued, here the giants of Google/Amazon/Facebook/Microsoft/Apple just distract you into submission.
