I'm looking for a very specific pair of gaming headphones for my computer and I need you guys to help me out because this is not an easy decision.

They must fill the following requirements:

* Must be 5.1 or 7.1
* Must have optical or digital input for audio (not USB only)

* Prefer no built-in sound card
* Microphone not necessary

Reason for this is I would like to use my own sound card's optical or digital output to feed sound to these headphone so I would not like to use the "built-in sound card" that most of these headsets have.

Any review links are greatly appreciated.

5.1 and 7.1 headsets are a huge gimmick. A pair of good stereo headphones with decent soundstage will blow them out of the water. For pure gaming, I'd go for the ATH AD700.

Whats your budget?

1. Surround sound headphones have small angles separating drivers, they are worthless
2. You want a DAC in your headphones? Why?
3. This statement contradicts the above statement. For the headphones to take a digital signal, they need a built in DAC, which is one of the 3 important parts of a sound card. Most headphones come with cheap-o DACs anyways, bad for gaming.
4. That's cool.

NONNONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONON ONONONO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT get 5.1 headphones. They are absolutely pointless. Most sound cards have a 3d type thing on them that sounds really good, just like 5.1. Those 5.1 headphones are just a gimmick. They dont work. So do you have a budget? And get real headphones, none of that logitech crap, no matter what anyone tells you.

I am aware of the unnecessary of surround sound but it's personal preference to me so please avoid stereo for the time being.

Don't count budget for now. Just throw me all the options out there. Nothing ridiculous obviously, just reasonable. Keep in mind, optical/digital input jack is a requirement. I am aware this needs a module but as long as it doesn't need drivers and isn't dependent on the computer that's fine.

Any reason why you'd want 5.1? Stereo headphones with decent soundstaging have far better sound positioning than any 5.1/7.1 headset. They will give you a better "surround sound" effect than some gimmicky gamer headset.

I refuse to give you any 5.1 surround headphone options. Headphones with a large sound stage are way better. Im telling you. With those headphones its basically taking a 5.1 speaker setup and putting all the speakers close to your left and right ears. Like really close. Where a good stereo set with large soundstage it will sound like 5.1 with the speakers far away. With my shure 840s and playing gta and I bang into something when Im not looking or something, I seriously think that someone is breaking into my house or something, becuase it sounds really real.

A great pair of cans with massive soundstage and "Dolby Headphone" is much better than any 5.1/7.1/9.1/Infinite.

Open1, look here to see why everyone is shooting down "surround/5.1/7.1" headphones. Go through the whole thread, and especially this post, which I've affectionately bookmarked.
