2) Samsung Magician is poo.

On another forum (I checked through so many last night that I can't remember the exact one) a user had contacted Samsung directly, who (supposedly) told him that their Magician benchmarking does not use "4 lances" (I don't know what that means) and should not be considered an accurate reflection of the drive speed. Fancy that; they themselves refer to their benchmarking suite as rubbish.
The same goes for AS SSD, appparently. It does use more factors than Magician when testing, but it's "full of bugs."
If you want accurate results for testing your M.2 drive, use CrystalDisk 5+ or ATTO. They actually work!
You should still be using Magician to update your firmware and set your over provisioning, though.

.

That was an older version of Magician, and the issue was that Magician would bench the Random Read and Write using 1 PCIE lane instead of the full 4, so it would look like the drive had half the Random Read and Write than it was supposed to. I believe they fixed that with Magician 5.0.

You need Magician. Windows Update won't do anything for your firmware on any device.

Just installed the newest firmware (3B6QCXP7) on my Samsung 960 pro 1tb and now my m.2 drive freezes all the time. Opened a ticket with Samsung and they reported this issue is getting bigger....DUH...QA your crappy new firmware before giving it out to the public. Stuck with a freezing PC now. Thanks Samsung...They have NO ETA on a fix...Joke since you can't go back to older firmware.

Glad I didn't know about the new firmware. The previous one is still working perfectly but I would have updated it anyway.

I still find it weird that Magician says the installed firmware is the latest one.

It sucks that it's happening, but i don't think its a widespread issue. I updated my 960 Pro after I saw the posts and spoke to their tech support and asked if I shouldn't update. The guy told me they've only seen about 3 people on Overclock, 7 on their community forum, and only 2 people have directly contacted them about a freezing issue after the FW update and the agent believed the 2 people they've spoke with are from the community forum. That's a handful of people, so with a product that has sold at the least tens of thousands, that is the smallest margin of error any product could ask for.

So far no performance or freezing issues on my 960 Pro.

But you also have to look at how many people actually go into magician and check the firmware, and then update it. Probably also a handful so far.

Having said that I haven't had any problems with it.

Update my 960 pro 1TB to new firmware. Now the performance benchmark in magician refuse to run. I had to cancel or it will freeze my system.

Edit: Annnd yep, application freezes. Damn I should really check forums before updating firmwares on samsung ssd

Completely possible as well.

Is it just the Magician application freezing or the whole system? On Samsung Community, it looks like they have been asking people to try testing with Crystal Disk Benchmark and provide their results from there.
