Raid/Joining two ssd's?

I have a 512gb SSD (sata). just a cheap one, I grabbed an identical second model to double storage.

I would like to see these drives as one volume, they will be used to store my games. I was thinking Raid 0. Which I assume would give me the best speeds.

Would that be the recommended method? I know that data loss is an issue, but if I just keep it for games thats not a big deal should one drive die.

I see windows has a drive spanning feature but I have never used it.

Yep, just use windows to stripe them.

or bios level. They should clock about the same.

So striping them in windows will also give a speed bonus?

oops, yes you wanna use the spanning feature.

as far as data loss mitigation. use a cheap rust spinner as a backup if you're concerned. my 4TB SATA SSD R0 dumps to a 4TB spinny, same for my 4TB VNMe system drive.

For speed considerations with SSDs, it's not worth it... for using the drives as just a big volume, sure; but splitting up your game installs onto multiple disks is simple and the extra steps of setting up raid isn't worth the effort, imho.

This day and age, I think RAID 5 with parity is the only one worth it.

Setting up a raid pool is incredibly quick and easy, seeing it as a single drive and the performance gain. Definitely worthwhile IMO for data you don't really care about.

agreed r5 is a better go to, but its quite easy to backup a stripe to a spinny for nearly the same effect without losing any storage space due to redundancy.

now adays, its a couple clicks, & you're off to the races. Performs just as well as any board level solution I've tested... take that how you will

I just don't like having multiple drives, because (especially with these small 500gb drives and the size of games) you will surely get to a point where there is an unusable amount of space (maybe under 80gb) for any modern game.

Thanks for the info people. Won't have the drive until Christmas so I will play with it then.

@skupples 4tb system drive jealous!
