Just note to send my latest burnt-out R9 280x to its BOINC graveyard in the corner of the room.....

Despite it's shinny waterblock the VRM temperatures kept climbing every day, so the GPU was down clocked to try and avoid the inevitable.

But, last night, she died, no fuss, no fury, just clocks to zero and gone.....

So ebay sourced a "new" one today for £53 including a matching waterblock !

So all I need is another reference card to boil to death on [email protected]

I also have three 7970s in that graveyard.  One of them was a zombie that came back to life twice, and crunched with no video out capabilities for about 4 months.  The latest, may still be alive, but it refused to be recognized on my new MilkyWay cruncher.  £53 with a block is a great price to add to your MilkyWay arsenal.  I haven't looked through Ebay recently, but if my third card is truly dead then I will have to see about finding a new one.

My last card that died suffered the same fate as yours.  It was under water, and it was crunching for a long time at 1200/1600 and max volts. The VRMs finally gave out in fairly spectacular fashion, burning the traces on the PCB.

I guess I am lucky, the only bad thing that has happened to my cards is the fans gave out, easy enough to replace those though.

NAH! GPU's are the only thing you can abuse and not have them call the cops. Hey maybe some bright soul should start up a GPU protection service, they do have rights now don't they? {Snicker} In a few years they might have intelligence.....

Proper way to kill a GPU.  Put GPU under water -> Flash unlocked BIOS -> Run max volts -> Benchmark on chilled water -> Run MilkyWay 24/7.   :D  Two of the cards that died on me were original reference 7970s, bought at release, that I abused pretty hard benchmarking.

With the new MilkyWay tasks this probably isn't actually a problem.  The old MilkyWay app was a scorcher on the VRMs.
