Figured I might as well start a proper thread for this... Needless to say, it's kind of bugging me, but I'm trying to stick with it tongue.gif

Anyways! I've been wanting to run some of the VirtualBox apps on Cerberus and it just doesn't seem to want to play well. Tried the official install (yup, through the Ubuntu software manager, go ahead and laugh tongue.gif ), I get "VirtualBox not isntalled" in BOINC Manager.... Uninstalled it, then said screw it just going to use apt-get.... Well, it installs, but then I get these errors....

And of course BOINC Manager is still being all coy with the "Message from server: VirtualBox not installed" annoyance.

EDIT: Excuse the attempt at modprobe, was a supposed solution posted online... that of course seems to go nowhere.

Can you try this for me wulf?

Uninstall vbox from Ubuntu Software.

Download file from here (Zesty/64bit?)

Open Terminal
Code:
sudo apt install

Find vbox file (probably in downloads)

Drag vbox file from Downloads to terminal with code above

Select terminal...Press enter..PW...Restart.

I will be following this with interest, EVEN with a DP running, my output wasn't really what I wanted it to be and I need to be running a Linux VM to get the most out of the CPU's.

But please be kind if nube questions creep into the convo....

I'm not a nube by any means, but just never have seen a need for linux I never got into it. that makes me a LINUX nube...

So, please pardon in advance...... biggrin.gif

Insert playful comment about how it seems everyone forgets the "e" at the end of my name tongue.gif

As for installing... I've tried direct download (and then installing it using code another member here provided, I don't quite remember what it was just yet) and I've also tried installing it via apt-get... Naturally uninstalling it in between each attempt. Every method still provides that same error screen.

Didn't try clicking and dragging, but I did navigate to the folder and install it manually that way... Restarted BOINC Manager and got the "Not Installed" error. Tried rebooting computer, same error.

I'll give reinstalling it a sixteenth time a try, maybe that's the lucky number. Yup, I've gone through various ways of installing it that many times, all with the same "not installed" results so far. And yup, installed the extensions every single time too.

In your screenshot it says "Use dmesg to find out why"

What's the output of:
Code:
dmesg | grep vboxdrv

Isn't there a BOINC version that comes with vbox?

That is only the Windows BOINC client which has that option.

I suspect I'm typing something incorrectly. If I type the code as written, it just shows another line.

If I type them as two separate lines, it stays there "thinking for a while and doesn't give me another command line.

They don't work as seperate commands.

dmesg is the kernel log, and the added "| grep vboxdrv" searches the log for any instances of vboxdrv.

Did you run:
Code:
modprobe vboxdrv

prior to:
Code:
dmesg | grep vboxdrv

If you run the above modprobe command followed by the dmesg command it should list the errors.

But lets make this easier.
Code:
sudo apt-get install pastebinit

Pastebinit will upload the outputs so we won't be limited by only seeing pics of your screen

Run these in order.
Code:
modprobe vboxdrv
Code:
dmesg | pastebinit
Code:
lsmod | pastebinit
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | pastebinit

After each pastebinit a url will be shown.
