Looks like they're contemplating taking over for Bitcoin Utopia, and possibly with the intent to help out other projects too with it, but.... It's automatically enabled for GCC for some reason.
Quote:
As BU are no any more exists, we have prepared something special for some of you...

Now, you can mine XMR (Monero coins) using ATI cards on our pool, where one percent of mined coins will be sent for servers and infrastructure - rest of it is yours...

What we plan in furure?
1. More coins.
2. More platforms (Linux, CUDA support).
2. Mining for other BOINC projects - if any admin is interested in supporting it's project - just sent PM to me or Goofyx with project wallet address (we will confirm it on his project forum) then we will release app with HIS wallet address and the mined coins will be sent automatically send to his wallet.

Additional info: http://boinc.gridcomputingcenter.org/forum_thread.php?id=226

Quoted only the first half in order to try and stick with the rules for the news section of the forums.

I don't quite know what to think myself, but it being reported by some as being automatically enabled does kind of bother me, simply because I like to know what's running... Would be really annoying to walk away from Cerberus (since I don't check on it that often) only to find out it's been running the 9500 GT on it raggedly because of some bitcoin mining app.

EDIT: Mine wasn't turned on automatically, maybe it only does such for those who had all applications turned on?

Looks like the three 12 tasks that my 280x tried to mine (without my consent) failed.

Also strange that they're still not exporting their stats... headscratch.gif Seems like that would be the first step in gaining contributers.

The general disarry that is the GCC project is the main reason why I haven't added it to the list of projects threads.  When your homepage has this for a description "XXX is a research project, based at YYY, that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in XXX.", then it's probably time to finish up your project pages rather than release some new test apps. :2cents:

It sounds like it will only run the XMR tasks, if you have selected to run test applications.  I'll keep an eye on it, and hopefully they sort things out since Goofy was a pretty successful project.

Agreed. It would be nice if they'd sort things out, fix the main website, and also answer some of the questions people have... Oh, and not automatically turn it on for people. I know I would have been pretty cranky if suddenly my card is mining without my explicit permission...

Edit: the admins reply of "oh, just don't run it then" seems to not really catch onto that person's original point... That without warning a cryptocurrency miner was being run on their gpu without any real notice... Why would you automatically push such to people when it's a rather touchy subject?

Personally I would be a lot happier if projects that wanted to push their own Bitcoin to support themselves did so than with Gridcoin's push to monetize all of boinc under their banner.

And if it took the closure of Bitcoin Utopia to push that point home for them then BU served it's ultimate purpose, to show independent, finance starved projects how to support themselves.

And tell GC to take a hike.....

Anyway at this point, tracking top team stats are almost a useless endeavor as GC tops most charts and soon will top all charts. Making team stats tracking an almost worthless endeavor... (much like BU did)

At this point, I would say it;'s past time to discuss separating GC from the stats much like was done with BU.

Have a category for paid to crunch projects separate from full volunteer teams......

I am displeased that they tried to mine cryptocoin on my computers (for their own benefit) without my consent.

I saw the other week in the preferences that a wallet option had come up. It's sad they haven't fixed project issues yet like stats and making NCI apps actually NCI. Putting NCI in the app name doesn't magically make it NCI.

Okay, this seems interesting. Why do people are not happy to use their machines for mining and getting profit, since that is also used by the scientific network?

How do you get profit w/o a wallet setup? I'm guessing a good portion of the tasks completed by people so far didn't have one setup.

Exactly. I have no wallet set up. Without a wallet, how can I be sure they are not using my GPU entirely for their profit? Instead of my GPU working on the projects that I had designated...
And as far as I am concerned, there is no scientific value behind the tasks we are currently getting from GCC. I only run it because it is "NCI"
