hey guys, what's the consensus on the task loading for nvidia GPUs (pascal, turing, volta) for [email protected]? I'm running 2 per GPU. And if more than 2 can be beneficial, how would I do so on differnt rigs... I'm using the Projects Preferences set in my [email protected] account right now.

2 Parallel tasks is what I run at on all my GPUs for [email protected] AMD/NV in Windows and Linux. I prefer the app_config version as it's an instant adjustment but [email protected] offers it via the web preferences as well.

Some at [email protected] have done testing at 1x/2x/3x/4x. There was very little improvement above 2x. Mainly when the CPU does some cruching/task switching.

There were issues with certain [email protected] data files not working with Turing/Volta GPUs. For everything else but Turing/Volta those tasks ran quite a bit faster, possibly due to the data file being smaller. The project has not released work for one of those data files in some time and I think the admin put in some server logic to not send that kind of work out to Turing/Volta PCs.

You can see the data file version in the task ID. In this case it is LATeah1052L: LATeah1052L_148.0_0_0.0_23416267_1. The data set has been lasting about 4 days before the next one is issued.

After running a bit longer than my initial testing, I did see improvements on my VII running 3x, but for everything else, I've always ran 2x tasks.

If you don't want to use an app_config, you could also use different preference sets for each machine. Default could be set at .5, and then you could set Home, Work, or School to .33. Just be sure and change the computer "location" to whichever set of preferences you want too use.

The down side to the above, as mentioned by mmonnin, is that the change does not take effect immediately. All of the tasks that have already been downloaded, will have to be completed before you'll start to see the machine running at the new setting.

Grabbed this from their forum. The app name looks right. The gpu_usage is just 1 divided by the # of tasks you want to run in parallel. So 0.33 for 3x, 0.25 for 4x, etc. CPU_usage will just limit the # of CPU BOINC tasks, not the actual CPU usage used by a GPU task. I always set mine at 0.1 so I can run full CPU tasks.

Code:
<app_config>
    <app>
        <name>hsgamma_FGRPB1G</name>
        <gpu_versions>
            <gpu_usage>0.33</gpu_usage>
            <cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
        </gpu_versions>
    </app>
</app_config>
Edit: With the web preferences this might double up and try to run like 6 tasks at once. Never tried that before.

so it's basically the same app_config I use for MW... tho I never would have got that name. I'll give it a go on TXps and see what happens.
edit: okay - running 3 per on 2 TXPs and it did not instantly bugout. I'll post back with results.

EDIT: It looks like there is only a marginal gain. BAck of the envelope calc: 2 tasks per GPU (13.5min each) ~ 9.2 per hour. 3 tasks per GPU (19.5min each) ~ 9.4 per hour.

Yup, just change the <name> field. Some projects don't use consistent names between whats listed in the task vs the Applications page vs whats required in that field. If you don't know, make a file (I just copy it one from project to project), have BOINC Mgr re-read the config files and the Event log will say what the real name is. In this case I guessed Atlas but it's case specific as ATLAS

Quote:
[email protected] 3/3/2019 8:17:04 PM Your app_config.xml file refers to an unknown application 'Atlas'. Known applications: 'Theory', 'ATLAS'
For BOINC Mgr to know which apps are available, you'll have to download tasks otherwise it won't know and it'll say it doesn't know of any apps.

INterestingly, the TXps accepted the 3 per config file. The 2080Tis will not (yet), and only run 2 per. Maybe it has something to do with the TXp driver compute "fix" NV released last year?

Overclock that VRAM. I went from +300 to +400 and times went from 15:20 at 2x to 14:55. 25 seconds for an extra 100MHz on my 1080Ti.
