Projects of the Month for March 2019

March Projects of the Month

[email protected]
Start: 22 - Goal: 22 - End: 22 | It has been a bit since we had LHC up as a POTM. No real chance of moving up in the overall rankings, but we might be able to start working our way up in the Formula BOINC Marathon.
[email protected]
Start: 21 - Goal: 19 - End: 19 | We haven't ran Yoyo as a POTM the month for a few years, so let's give it a go and see if we can move up into the top 20.
[email protected]
Start: 22 - Goal: 21 - End: 20 | Einstein is a pretty reliable project, so we should be able to run it all month without so much down time.

As soon as I posted this thread, I stopped getting Einstein tasks.

*EDIT* One machine is back up and running, but the other still won't grab any tasks.

Yeah I guess I should have posted that earlier. A bad weekend for GPU projects. MW, SETI, and [email protected] all down.

Looks like LHC has removed some apps. Just 3 real ones available now. LHC also requires stats export to be enabled.

Every LHC ATLAS Simulation 2.57 task I've done has ended with a computation error at exactly 10:04 on 2 different machines, one a Ryzen the other my 2p E5-2670.

That is the native app without VBox. Did you setup CVFMS and Singularity?

This will tell you if it's setup.
Code:
cvmfs_config probe

From one of your tasks.
Quote:
Checking for CVMFS
which: no cvmfs_config in (/bin:/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/lib/llvm/7/bin:/opt/bin:/opt/cuda/bin)
ls: cannot access '/cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/sw': No such file or directory
cvmfs_config doesn't exist, check cvmfs with cmd ls /cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/sw
I think the Test app option being unchecked might be able to not DL the native app. Although I think I've tried it and still received native ATLAS tasks.

There is an overly complicated version to download/compile CVFMS and Singularity here:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/...ad.php?id=4840

I tried using repositories to install CVFMS and Singularity but I haven't received any tasks to see if it works yet.

Install CVFMS
Code:
sudo apt-get install lsb-release
wget https://ecsft.cern.ch/dist/cvmfs/cvmfs-release/cvmfs-release-latest_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i cvmfs-release-latest_all.deb
rm -f cvmfs-release-latest_all.deb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cvmfs
Setup file
Code:
sudo mkdir -p /scratch/cvmfs

sudo gedit /etc/cvmfs/default.local
Add this to the text file:

Code:
CVMFS_REPOSITORIES=atlas.cern.ch,atlas-condb.cern.ch,grid.cern.ch
CVMFS_CACHE_BASE=/scratch/cvmfs
CVMFS_QUOTA_LIMIT=4096
CVMFS_HTTP_PROXY=DIRECT
Setup CVFMS

Code:
sudo cvmfs_config setup
Test to see if it works:

Code:
cvmfs_config probe
It should return
Quote:
Probing /cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch... OK
Probing /cvmfs/atlas-condb.cern.ch... OK
Probing /cvmfs/grid.cern.ch... OK
Singularity install:
Code:
sudo wget -O- http://neuro.debian.net/lists/xenial.us-ca.full | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neurodebian.sources.list
sudo apt-get install -y singularity-container
Test to see if it returns a version:
Code:
singularity --version
Edit: This seems to work. A task has been running for nearly 3 hours using 1853mb of memory so a lot less than the VBox version.

Also app_config file to reduce the # of threads if needed. Theory only used 1GB of memory per BOINC. Atlas was using 6.6GB for the VBox version

Code:
<app_config>

    <app_version>
        <app_name>Theory</app_name>
        <plan_class>vbox64_mt_mcore</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>1</avg_ncpus>
	<cmdline>--nthreads 1</cmdline>
    </app_version>

    <app_version>
        <app_name>TheoryN</app_name>
        <plan_class>native_theory</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>1</avg_ncpus>
	<cmdline>--nthreads 1</cmdline>
    </app_version>

    <app_version>
        <app_name>ATLAS</app_name>
        <plan_class>vbox64_mt_mcore_atlas</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
	<cmdline>--nthreads 2 --memory_size_mb 4800</cmdline>
    </app_version>

    <app_version>
        <app_name>ATLAS</app_name>
        <plan_class>native_mt</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
	<cmdline>--nthreads 4</cmdline>
    </app_version>
</app_config>
Edit: Added native_mt app_config and memory_size_mb command.

Got some [email protected] gpu tasks at some point today. Thought I'd share this 2080Ti vs Titan V comparison: The Vs are running in P2 at 1500MHz at ~100W each giving ~ 12min per task. The 2080Tis are running at 2070MHz at ~ 200W each giving ~ 15/16min per task.

cvmfs and singularity are both in Gentoo's portage but cvmfs is failing to compile. I'll have to post in the Gentoo forums and see if someone has an answer, until then I'm just running Yoyo.

Does Yoyo have regular maintenance as well as it is down now?
