Help With First Mechanical Keyboard Purchase

So guys, I've been using a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 for over 8 years and I think it's time for an upgrade and I think I want a mechanical keyboard. I've never owned or to my knowledge used a mechanical keyboard. I'm not real sure what I want/need. I've googled a lot the last couple of days and I see literally thousands of keyboards and switch combinations. I type an lot on my PC and play games so I need something that will work fine for both. I also want to keep the sound low, hence is why I've looked at MX Reds and Red Silent switches. After that I'm not real picky about brand. I've been looking at Corsair and HyperX alloy keyboards. Any advice or opinions? I'm not sure if I should just get a keyboard and then swap the switches myself or try and find something that have Red Silent switches already.

I'm wanting to do the same. I've been using OEM Dell's since day 1, 15 years ago. :-\

I kinda like the Steelseries, like the Apex M400
But I have no clue what I need or want.

Just replaced my Ducky shine after 10 years or so of service, would definitely recommend looking at them. Picked up a "Ducky One 2" and couldn't be happier.

Agreed.

You can't go wrong with any Ducky, if this is OP's first time venturing into the world of Mechanical keyboards.

Also don't forget a far better world of Alps switches, that alone will have you addicted for some time to come.

Ewwwwwww, MX Reds? Never understood the point of a mechanical switch without a tactile bump, might as well as use a membrane KB

Don't type like a baboon and MX Browns are plenty quiet, and if you do type like an ape, add some o-rings.

What switches did you get?

The reason I'm wanting mx red silent switches is because my PC is in my bedroom and sometimes late at night ill take while my wife sleeps so I don't want anything loud enough to wake her up.

MX Browns. In same situation as you, browns aren't very loud (unless you are angry typing), so when woman is sleeping and I'm on my comp right next to her it isn't too loud.

Guys, I have another question. Did you go with a TKL keyboard? I've never owned one but I might buy one. Not sure if I'll actually miss the ten key pad or not.

Do you use the numpad on a daily basis/do a lot of Excel/Access work? If not then you won't miss it.

You can buy wireless numpads cheap if you realize you miss it later. I like the desk space more than I liked a numpad. I bought a wireless numpad along with my TKL (similar to this) on AliExpress when they had the $10 off mobile order coupons.

I think I used it once and it's been sitting in a drawer unused since ... but it was like a $1 shipped to my door

Just wanted to update on what my decision came down to. I ended up getting a Ducky One 2 Blue LED TKL with MX Browns. There was a few factors to why I got this particular keyboard. I looked at the RGB One 2 but from all the research I did, you could not dim the RGB, only change the colors but the LED boards you can dim. This is something I really wanted because I feel the RGB keyboards would be too bright for my liking because at night I like to dim a lot. Also I tool a day or so to see how much I actually used the numpad and I honestly barely used it and from measuring, the Ducky is 8 inches smaller from side to side than my Sidewinder which is going to save me a TON of desk space. I do plan on buying a wireless numpad just in case because I am working on my bachelors in IT so sometimes for classes I do have to enter a lot of numbers.

Also I decided to not go with MX Reds and went with Browns because from everything I've read, MX Reds isn't great for typing and most of the reviews I've read have said that it's not a great experience SO I went with the middle ground switch that actually has great reviews for gaming and typing and isn't loud. I also got o rings if I want to try them.

Thanks everyone for your input.
