Just got the Cougar 550 and the Asus Gladius today as they both sport the same 3988 sensor. First impressions
Gladius: 2000Hz polling awesome but mouse is too heavy and doesn't glide well / consistent for me. Impressed with the overall package but likely to sell this one pronto.
Cougar 550: I'm getting the same accuracy in-game as Zowie and XM300 - good sign on day one. Can't feel the weight like Gladius until I lift it - weight is more in the back. Very likely to be a keeper.
Both have cables that are too stiff. Software is good for both, especially the Cougar.

Zowie EC1-A vs Cougar 550M @1000hz,1600/1550dpi setting.
