idk if its 5, but excessive shortcuts most definitely slows windows down. I see it all the time at work with the old birds. They all use the desktop as their main file store.

scooping them all into one folder on the desktop drastically increases performance, compared to 3 monitors full.

here's a really cool thing about this statement - you can prove it unlike 99.99% of these types of claims.

i've been using windows the same way for decades.

windows key to search, and two things on the desktop. a desktop folder and the bin, because i'm too lazy to move the bin.

How about desktop toolbar and hide all desktop icons? Clean wallpaper!

Like I said...

I usually have five shortcuts; My Computer/This PC (or whatever Microsoft are calling it this year), User Folder, Recycle Bin (dunno why, I usually Shift+Delete so it doesn't get used much...), Rocksmith shortcut and whatever other Steam game I am currently playing. Admittedly right now I have two on my laptop and eight on the desktop... at least in Windows. Linux I'm more minimalist.

When I was still running Surround, it had a slightly more visible impact - I suspect it has something to do with the size of the cache for the Windows 3D accelerated desktop, although I've never bothered to investigate further due to lack of time.

I've noticed recently that all my colleagues that use Macs follow the "everything on the desktop" method of filing. OK, so they'll put things in separate directories based on what project they belong to... but everything is on the desktop.

i like the hide desktop + toolbar desktop idea.

this is the second thing in two days that makes me think I should get my MCSA. I'm working on ITIL already. Two of the easiest and biggest pay boosting certs out there, without having to become a full fledged infrabro. A+ means little for me at this point, i experienced thru that "requirement" but i've had people turn me away due to no ITIL.
