Well I gave up on the idea - It's a machine for someone else that I was assisting in getting backed up - cloned etc......

I didn't have any experience with IDE / SATA adapters etc....till it stands to reason I wasn't aware of the need for a PCI card to be added into the equation as well.

I did manage to get a USB to IDE to work to perform a clone of the OS so the objectives were achieved but to add more items that may not work and also adding to a small case the idea wasn't pursued after the simpler option was chosen.

To use SATA drives I did get a USB / SATA bridge so SATA drives can be connected externally for storage all in all done and dusted......

Thanks for the info. anyway and maybe it could be useful if another situation arises similar to this one.
