[wccftech.com] Vega 20 GPU Estimated To Feature 20 TFLOPs of Compute

Quote:
AMD is the first and only GPU maker to announce a 7nm product which will be launching in the 2nd half of 2018, as confirmed by AMD themselves. The new 7nm process based Vega 20 GPU will come with a range of new features while offering twice the density compared to 14nm Vega 10 GPU since AMD is packing more stuff in a smaller die and will also be twice as much efficient due to enhanced architecture design and process maturation.

Power house of a professional card. I imagine nvidia has a 7nm professional card in the wings as well though.

But exactly as I predicted the insanse cost of 7nm means gaming cards are a very long way out.

Is it really insane? I haven't gotten all of the details so I guessed a 300mm diameter wafer and 2/3 yield, and went with the given $10k wafer price and 360mm^2 die size and plugged it into this: http://www.silicon-edge.co.uk/j/inde.../die-per-wafer and got $100 per die.

For the biggest, most powerful gpu that isn't even available yet. I made some assumptions and don't know much about die manufacture, but this cost seems within the realm of reasonable, not insane.

Edit: used wrong word

How does AMD know they have the world's first 7nm GPU?

It was already demoed in Computex, do you know any other company that has made a 7nm GPU?

No one knows what Nvidia has.

Really, they shouldn't be proclaiming to have the first 7nm GPU when it isn't released yet. They might beat Nvidia to 7nm, but for all we know Nvidia might release one next month.

First. It is not insane, the die are not as big as you think given the density of 7nm is 116 mTR / mm^2. It will probably cost 20-30% more, but they are going to made way smaller. Next, long way out is your assumption. By mid next year we should be seeing them in the market, both AMD & Nvidia.

How is that poor when GV100 only top out at 14.5 TFLOP in SP and even halved in DP?
