what are the chances of this being GDDR6 instead?

not interested in a sort of refresh/rebrand etc. like AMD has done quite a lot lately. I need something with oomph for a reasonable price point. Neither AMD nor Nvidia can offer that. Turing is way too expensive and a complete waste of money, AMD has nothing to compete with anything better than a 1080.

Well the good news is Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out in like 3 weeks and it doesn't matter if I have a RTX 2080 Ti or not because its not on PC.

Hope they don't take too long with 7nm next year.

The real "hit" would be a Vega on TSMC with GDDR6 or decent HBM.

This Polaris refresh is nothing new, it has been talked about before on streams and hinted at. The 12nm for Polaris is nice but it's a small evolution nothing more. Same as Nvidia milked their Pascal cards with higher clock memories.
A 680 with GDDR6... that clocks +100-200MHz... would be an interesting beast but not happening.

Correction, the HD 6970 was not a recycled HD 5870, it was based on a different chip, with 500 million more transistors, featuring a reworked architecture. They switched from VLIW5 to VLIW4, added a second tesselator, improvement in FP64, going to 1/4 instead of 1/5, UVD 3 and support for DisplayPort 1.2 (double the bandwidth) and also support for HDMI 1.4a.

I definitely do not mind refreshes, as long as there is some type of improvement.

Either it needs to draw less power, or run higher frequencies.

The RX580 was noticeably faster stock to stock, but also had much more overclocking room due to actually using a bit less power.

I do agree with some naming scheme that lets people know its an improved prior card, rather than a new series name that suggests there really is a new card.

If AMD could get the 680 to sit close to 2ghz core speed, it would be one heck of a card for the money, as the 5xx series proved the memory is about tapped out for performance. unless they could loosen the memory timings and push for a 10-30% better memory frequency

Plus, there are some games that for some reason really enjoy AMD architecture and is much more stable, though not necessarily better performing overall.

if they switch over to a smaller node then its quite likely it'll consume less power at a slightly higher clock.
furthermore, just like how HBM2 reduces IMC power demand, if they make use of GDDR6 then they can also expect less power consumption while providing vastly higher bandwidth.

Depends on what you're using as a reference point for those clock increases. Sadly even if you could OC it to 1700MHz, It's not going to cover that 25-30% gap 580 had to 1070. I mean, it would still be an interesting product to play with, due to presumably increased efficiency (Polaris already doesn't use too much power if you underclock/undervolt it) and faster RAM. It just wouldn't be a good buy, considering a decent 1070 costs 390€, and a 580 XTR card goes for about 300€. I doubt they're going to let them go much cheaper than that.
