[wccftech] Microsoft Rumored to be Working on 4 Different New Xbox Consoles for Release in 2019/2020

Quote:
Microsoft is said to be working on two traditional next-gen Scarlett consoles. One, codenamed Anaconda, is the next-gen equivalent of the Xbox One X – a powerful machine for enthusiasts.

The other Scarlett console is codenamed Lockhart, and it’s designed to be the equivalent of the Xbox One S – a less-expensive option for the more mainstream gamer. Both Anaconda and Lockhart are expected to launch sometime in 2020.

Before either of their traditional next-gen consoles come out, Microsoft is planning to release a disc-less streaming-only console codenamed Maverick. This isn’t part of the Scarlett line and it may arrive as soon as Spring of 2019, although plans can change.

Finally, Microsoft is also prepping another revision of the Xbox One S – this version of the console will be redesigned to reduce manufacturing costs and be focused largely on xCloud streaming, but it will still have a traditional disc drive. Expect it in 2019.
Source

Seems like a good strategy. Want a cheaper console? Get the no-disc model. Don't trust the digital store? Keep using discs, 1080 or 4k. More options are always good.

While more options is better, my fear is the higher premium costs.
Meaning instead of lets say 4K+dvd as a basic option and normal price, the 1080p+no dvd option will be the basic option, and everything added will be a premium instead of a reduced price.

Hardware wise, adding a DVD reader isn't costly, but for that "not trusting digital", you are going to pay a heavy premium price.
Same with 1080p vs 4K. The hardware could most likely support both, but to get 4K, pay another extra premium to "unlock" that feature.

And who wants to pay for previous generations display output? Everyone will want the 4K, and hence everyone pay the premium.

More options are not always good. Ever hear of the Steam Machine? How many options were there that only served to confuse the consumer. Mom or dad wants simple and all these options will just complicate things and they'll just go for a simpler option like Playstation.

What it looks like to me is that they want to create different tiers of products where they can charge a premium for what use to be an all inclusive console a la Nvidia. For example instead of the console that had everything for $400 (GTX 580) now it will be $600 and the cut down versions will be priced incrementally lower.

Hey, everyone wants to get in on that product stack greed gravy train.

PC greed tiers and game design infringement to encourage lootboxes are killing our joy and this hobby.

So wait until they increase the price and don't buy it. That's called a choice

Personally I dislike having the Xbox One S at half the price of Xbox one X. I need more options

The steam machines didn't work out because steam OS was a terrible, terrible idea made by a company that doesnt listen to its customers and was afraid of the windows store. Comparing it to the Xbox just makes no sense.

Wonder what the final product name will be. Xbox Two? Xbox Z? It would be nice if they stuck with a naming convention.

Consumers may as well just make a PC..plenty of options to choose from there...They should call it the Xbox X86 at this point.

Forever a WIP.

Fail boat, might as well buy a real rig at that rate. Can't say this is a good strategy in the slightest... they'd be better off selling an emulator package / xbox os for pc to run, even if it required a certain set of hardware. Basically a BYO console type deal, while still releasing their newest baddest Xbox hardware for the die hards.

That's a pretty ridiculous response. A next gen Xbox with a high and low end model is exactly what Microsoft and Sony are already doing. Why not do it again for the next gen? It's a strategy that is working well for both companies. I swear when people complain about getting more options it makes me so frustrated. How can you be that thick?
